비자살적 자해를 경험한 청년의 삶과 죽음 인식

국문 초록

본 연구는 비자살적 자해를 경험한 청년의 삶과 죽음에 대한 인식이 어떠하며 그것을 둘러싼 현상의 의미가 어떻게 구성되는지 이해할 목적에서 수행했다. 이를 위해 비자살적 자해 경험이 있는 연구참여자 5명을 엄선해서 각각 3회기의 심층 면담을 실시했고, 수집한 자료를 van Manen의 해석학적 현상학적 질적 연구방법으로 분석하였다. 그가 제시한 신체성, 공간성, 시간성, 관계성 등의 4개의 틀로 드러난 참여자의 경험과 인식을 질적 탐구로서 이해한 결과, 신체성에서는 고통을 회피하려 죽고자 했으나 목숨을 끊어버리기보다 온몸에 가득한 상처가 치유되지 않은 채 아픈 삶을 근근이 이어가는 이들의 현상이 발견되었다. 공간성에서는 삶이 전개되는 일상의 곳곳에서 연구참여자들의 생의 의지가 꺾이고 희망이 상실되었지만, 보잘것없는 존재일지언정 실재함을 알리고자 자해로서 도피처를 확보하며 버티는 실상이 확인되었다. 시간성에서는 어둡고 나약했던 과거와 사이버세계에 빠져있는 무기력한 현재 속에서도, 연구참여자들이 죽음으로 시간을 완전히 멈춰버리기보다는 삶의 상처를 토닥이며 다시 살고자 하는 희망적인 미래를 꿈꾼다는 점이 드러났다. 관계성에서는 다른 사람들과의 갈등 심화로 이들이 삶과 죽음 사이를 밀고 당기는 현상 안에서 분투하면서도, 지지적 관계를 통해 긍정적 변화의 가능성을 맞이한다는 사실이 밝혀졌다. 결과적으로 비자살적 자해를 경험한 청년의 삶과 죽음에 관한 중심주제는 ‘죽음의 근처에서도 언제나 삶을 갈망하는 몸부림’과 같았다. 이러한 발견점에 토대를 두어 비자살적 자해를 경험한 청년의 삶과 죽음 인식에 관한 관심 재고와 안정된 삶 지원을 위한 방안 모색, 정신건강 증대 목적의 개입 전략 등에 관해 제언하였다.

영문 초록

This study was intended to understand how young adults who have experienced Non-suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) perceive life and death and to gain up-to-date insights into what lies beneath. For this study, five people with past NSSI experience were chosen, and each of them underwent in-depth interviewed three times. Data analysis adopted Van Manen’s approach to hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative methodology. We looked into the experiences and perceptions of the participants based on four lifeworld existentials offered by Van Manen, i.e. lived body (corporeality), lived space (spatiality), lived time (temporality), and lived human relations (relationality). For corporeality, individuals with NSSI behaviors have tried to die to escape inner pain, but have not ended their lives and continue to struggle through life with unhealed wounds all over their bodies. For spatiality, the participants’ will to live was easily broken and their hope was lost in their daily lives, but they comforted themselves with Self-Injury to remind themselves that they were real even if they were worthless. For temporality, we found that, despite a shadowy past where they saw no hope for a brighter future and a present where they are immersed in the cyber world, failing to respond to other external stimuli, the participants dream of a hopeful future where they embrace their wounds and try to live again, rather than completely stopping time with death. For relationality, they struggle with the interpersonal difficulties and conflicts with others while hovering between life and death, but supportive relationships may motivate them to make positive changes in their lives. In conclusion, ‘the constant yearning for life in the vicinity of death’ came out as the central theme of the life and death of young adults who had experienced non-suicidal self-injuries. Based on this finding, this study suggests raising awareness on these young adults’ perception of life and death, seeking ways to support grounding their lives, and intervention strategies to improve their mental health.
