대학생 교양필수 독서토론 실행연구

국문 초록

대학생을 대상으로 하는 독서토론 수업, 어떻게 하면 휴대폰을 보거나 입을 다물고 있는 학생들이 수업에 참여할 수 있을까? 이 연구는 교양 필수 독서토론 교과를 가르치는 교수자가 학생들의 참여를 높이고자 하는 목적에서 수행한 실행연구이다. 독서토론과 학습 참여를 다룬 선행연구에서 뽑은 교수학습 요소를 적용하고, 이에 대한 학생들의 행동적, 정서적, 인지적 참여를 확인하였다. 4개 분반, 160명의 학생들과 4주씩 2차 순환기를 거쳐 수집한 자료를 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 학생들의 독서토론 수업 학습 참여를 증진하는 데에 네 가지 요소가 영향을 주는 것을 알 수 있었다. 학생들은 (1) 안전하고 조력적인 학습 환경에서 (2) 교수자에 대한 유대감을 가질 때 수업에 참여하였으며 (3) 테크놀로지, 학습 활동, 읽기 자료 등 수업에 새로운 요소가 투입될 때 학습 참여의 증거를 확인할 수 있었다. 이에 더해, (4) 수업의 새로운 요소에 집중할 수 있도록 수업 구조 등 나머지를 반복할 때 인지적 참여가 특히 증가한 것으로 확인되었다.

영문 초록

This action research study is conducted by an instructor who teaches a required liberal arts reading discussion course with the goal of engaging students in classroom activities, i.e., reading and discussion. Teaching and learning elements drawn from previous research on reading instruction and student engagement were applied to examine students’ behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. Data collected from 160 students in four classes in two four-week rotations were analyzed. The findings suggest that four factors contribute to student engagement in reading discussion classes. Students showed evidence of engagement when (1) they were in a safe and supportive learning environment, (2) they felt connected to the instructor, and (3) new elements were introduced into the lesson, such as technology, learning activities, and reading materials. In addition, cognitive engagement was found to be particularly high when (4) the rest of the lesson was repeated, such as the lesson structure, to focus on the new elements of the lesson.
