재난 기록에 형상화된 개인과 국가, 그리고 공동체

국문 초록

본고는 임진왜란 초기 상주 지역을 중심으로 활동한 검간 조정이 편찬한 『임진일기』를 통해 재난을 마주한 한 인간의 시선이 기록으로 표출된 양상을 살펴보고자 한 것에 해당된다. 『임진일기』는 기본적으로 전쟁 실기라는 성격으로 인해 상주를 중심으로 한 지역의 전쟁 상황, 피란민의 형상과 사회상, 관군과 의병의 활동 등 공적 기록에서 누락된 공백을 미시적 관점에서 보충하고 있다. 특히 사실적인 묘사와 기록을 통해 역사의 한 부분으로 존재했던 다양한 인간 군상을 되살려내고 있다는 측면에서 주목을 요한다. 이때 주목한 지점은 재난을 공통으로 경험한 개인과 가족, 국가가 상호의존성을 바탕으로 연결되어 있다는 점이다. 『임진일기』의 경우 여타 실기와 같이 사실의 기록에 바탕을 둔 점에서 유사하나, 전쟁이라는 특수한 재난 상황 속에서 개인과 가족을 중심으로 한 공동체와 이를 보호해야 하는 국가 사이에 연대와 결절이 어떤 관계를 맺고 있는지 포착한다는 점에서 차이가 드러난다. 즉, 『임진일기』는 개인, 가족, 국가로 포착되는 공동체가 돌봄의 주체로 수행하는 양상과 의미를 중심으로 주목되는 텍스트이다. 본고는 『임진일기』 가운데 재난 속에서 구현되는 공동체 의식에 조금 더 초점을 맞추어 살펴보았다. 그 결과 재난을 마주하는 한 인간의 시선을 통해 책임과 무력감 사이에서 고민하는 가부장의 일면을 발견할 수 있었고, 이러한 사태를 방기한 국가의 대리자로서 목민관에 대한 폭로를 통해 공동체 의식을 발현시키려는 의지를 확인할 수 있었다. 이와 함께 재난에 대처하는 공동체성의 형상과 의미가 무엇인지 살펴보았다. 이는 계급을 뛰어넘는 보편적 인류애의 발현을 통해 구현되는데, 특히 공서의 조건으로 설정되는 ‘인정’이라는 개념이 작동하여 재난 앞에 약자로 정위되는 공통 조건을 통해 공동체성으로 관류될 수 있었다. 뿐만 아니라 공동체성은 결국 구성 요소인 개인, 가족, 국가 사이의 관계에서 국가의 공적 책임과 역할이 명징하게 구현될 때 제 의미를 찾을 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이와 함께 본고는 실기와 같이 상대적으로 조명받지 못한 자료에 대한 관심 환기를 촉구하고 있다. 자료의 의미는 자료의 존재를 발굴, 소개하고 충실한 번역을 통해 밝혀질 수 있기 때문에, 이에 대한 관심은 지속적으로 요청된다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to examine the ways in which a human perspective in the face of disaster is expressed in records through the 『Im-jin-il-gi』 compiled by Gumgan Jo-jung, who was active in the Sangju area during the early years of the Im-jin War. Due to its nature as a war diary, 『Im-jin-il-gi』 fills in the gaps left out of official records from a micro perspective, including the war situation in the area centered on Sang-ju, the shape and society of the evacuees, and the activities of the government troops and medics. In particular, it is noteworthy in that it revives various human groups that existed as part of history through realistic depictions and records. The point of focus is the interdependence of individuals, families, and nations who experienced disasters in common. 『Im-jin-il-gi』 is similar to other true accounts in that it is based on factual records, but it is different in that it captures the relationship of solidarity and nexus between the community centered on individuals and families and the state that is supposed to protect them in the special disaster situation of war. In other words, 『Im-jin-il-gi』 is a text that centers on the forms and meanings of the community, captured as individuals, families, and the state, as subjects of care. This paper focuses more on the sense of community embodied in the disaster in 『Im-jin-il-gi』, and as a result, we can discover a side of the patriarch who is torn between responsibility and helplessness through the eyes of a human being facing the disaster, and the will to express a sense of community through the revelation of Mok-min-kwan as an agent of the state that prevented the disaster. In addition, we examined the shape and meaning of community in response to disasters. This is realized through the manifestation of universal humanity that transcends class, especially through the concept of 'recognition' set as a condition of public service, which was able to be perfused into community through the common condition of being the underdog in the face of disaster. Furthermore, we found that community finds its meaning when the public responsibility and role of the state is clearly embodied in the relationship between the individual, the family, and the state. This paper also calls for attention to relatively unexamined materials, such as the threads. The meaning of these materials can only be uncovered through their discovery, presentation, and faithful translation.
