운곡 원천석의 제화시 고찰

국문 초록

본고는 운곡 원천석(耘谷元天錫)의 제화시를 고찰한 것이다. 운곡은 여말 선초(麗末鮮初)의 학자이자 문인이다. 고려 말의 혼란한 정치를 개탄하면서 치악산에 은거한 인물이다. 그동안에 그에 대한 연구는 다방면에서 이루어졌다. 따라서 그의 시사적 위상이라든가 그의 한시가 보여주는 시적 소재의 다양성 등에 대한 논의가 주를 이루었다. 본고는 운곡 한시의 다양한 시세계 중 그의 제화시에 초점을 두었다. 제화시를 통해 운곡의 그림에 대한 안목과 시선, 그 정서와 미적 역량을 파악할 수 있다는 데 의미가 있다. 먼저 운곡의 시편을 통해서 세상을 보는 날카로운 시선과 군자로서의 진면목을 알 수 있었다. 또한 어미의 애절한 울음 앞에 아비는 그 슬픔 또한 절제할 수밖에 없는 시적 상황을 잘 드러냈다. 이러한 부분은 운곡의 시적 단련과 표현의 진정성을 알 수 있다. 운곡은 누구보다 더욱 치열하게 세상에 대한 비상한 관심과 안목을 시를 통하여 보여주었다. 이러한 운곡의 시는 제화시에서 그림에 대한 공감과 소통의 면모를 보였다. 화가에 대한 긍정적인 시선과 제화시로써 함께 공감하고 소통하고자 하였다. 그림 감상의 시점이 시인의 초점에서 멈추는 것이 아니라 확장시켜서 공유하면서 소통으로 이끌고 있다. 또한 사호도(四皓圖)와 삼소도(三笑圖)에 대한 시를 통해서 은자다운 삶의 소신과 여유를 표출하였다. 이는 그림 속의 인물과 시인을 동일시하는 관점에서 정서를 표출한 것이다. 그리고 운곡은 우중목우도(雨中牧牛圖)와 원성서방구품도시(願成西方九品圖詩)를 통해 불가의 무념무상과 안녕의 기원을 담고 있다. 이처럼 운곡은 제화시를 통해서 시인으로서 예술적 역량과 은자(隱者)의 소신과 여유, 그리고 불가(佛家)의 무심과 안녕에 대한 염원을 표출하였다.

영문 초록

This study speculated on Jehwasi(Poetry with Painting) by Ungok Won Chon-Seok who was a scholar and literary person in the late Goryeo and the early Chosun period. He was a hermit in Mt. Chiak while deploring confusing politics of the late Goryeo period. There are diverse studies on him during that time and the studies gave a focus on his topical status or diversity of the materials in his Chinese poetry. This study gave a focus on Ungok’s Jehwasi although his poetry had diverse materials and orientations. However, it is meaningful in that his insight, sensibility and aesthetic capability on painting can be understood through the Jehwasi. It shows his true character as a noble man and as an intellectual with sharp insight into and worries about the society, and expressed a poetic situation that father could not help controlling himself before mother’s grief. It indicates that his poetic mind was cultivated and his poetic expression was very sincere. He paid his deeper attention and sharper insight into the society through poetry than anyone else. He felt sympathy and communicated with painting in Jehwasi. He had a positive attitude towards painters and intended to be in sympathy and communicate with them. The viewpoint of appreciation led to communication beyond the poet’s focus. He expressed belief on his life as a hermit through poems on Sahodo(四皓圖) and Samsodo(三笑圖). Ungok expressed freedom from all ideas and thoughts and peace of Buddhism through the Woojungmokwoodo(雨中牧牛圖) and the Wonseongseobanggupumdosi(願成西方九品圖詩). Thus, Ungok’s Jehwasi expressed his artistic capability as a poet, confidence as a hermit and his desire for freedom from all ideas and thoughts, and peace.
