東谿 趙龜命에 있어서 意의 실체와 세계인식

국문 초록

본고는 東谿 趙龜命(1692~1737)에 있어서 意가 무엇인지를 논구하였다. 조귀명은 18세기 초 문단에서 가장 정채로운 문인이라는 평을 받는다. 그는 장자와 불교를 깊이 읽어 문장에 응용했고, 그 결과 인간 존재 자체에 대한 실로 짐작하기 어려운 깊은 사색을 남겼다. 이러한 사색은 문장으로 남아 조귀명은 당대에는 물론 구한말까지 생명력을 가지고 읽혔다. 문장가라는 조귀명의 정체성은 현대의 연구방향에도 깊은 영향을 끼쳤다. 처음 조귀명이 연구된 뒤로 지금까지 30여 년간 조귀명의 문장이론은 세부적으로 깊이를 더해갔지만, 변하지 않는 것은 ‘의’라는 개념이다. 조귀명 스스로 문장에서 가장 중요한 것은 ‘의’라고 강조했으며, 이에 대한 상세한 비평을 남겼기 때문에 후대의 연구자 역시 자연스럽게 여기에 주목한 것이다. 그런데, 道文分離, 自得, 適意, 主意 등으로 설명되는 그의 문장이론 연구는 언젠가부터 정체되어 있다. 조귀명 연구자들은 이론을 뒷받침할 만한 작품분석이 부재하다는 것에서 이유를 찾기도 하였다. 본 논문은 지금까지의 연구를 바탕으로 더 큰 관점에서 조귀명의 사유와 세계관을 고찰해보고자 한다. ‘의’는 정신의 기저와 문장의 내용에 광범하고 다양하게 드러나 있는 조귀명의 사유를 일관하는 단 하나의 낱말이다. 조귀명은 ‘의’를 통해 기존의 세계를 넘어 만물의 보편적 진리를 탐구하였으며, 이를 문장에 담고자 하였다. 조귀명의 사유는 靜觀을 통한 格物에서 구축되었지만, 정관의 자세와 인식과정은 성리학과 판이하다. 조귀명은 이러한 사유를 『東谿集』 중 ｢靜諦｣에 밀도 있게 담아놓았다. 조귀명이 여타의 문인들과 차별성을 가지는 글이 바로 이 ｢정제｣이다. ｢정제｣, ｢분향시필｣, ｢논선제편｣은 각각의 편차로 묶여 『東谿集』 권8을 이룬다. 이러한 특이한 편차는 의도된 것으로 조귀명 사유의 근원을 담고 있다고 평가할 수 있다. 조귀명은 하늘과 인간의 마음, 신체, 우주까지 그의 사유를 확장시킨다. 그 과정에서 일관되게 작동한 것이 바로 ‘의’이다. 조귀명의 핵심은 만물의 현상과 인간 근원의 문제를 깊이 사유한 것이다. 文論 연구는 조귀명이 이치를 담고자 노력한 ‘도구’만을 연구하는데 그친다. 조귀명이 문장을 쓰는 과정에서 가장 중시한 ‘의’가 무엇인지, 그가 문장으로 추구하고자 한 것이 무엇인지, 문장가를 넘어 새로운 지평을 연 사유하는 사람 조귀명을 고찰해야할 필요가 있는 시점이다.

영문 초록

This study discussed what the meaning was in Donggye Jo Gwimyeong (1692~1737). Jo Gwi-myeong is evaluated as the most elegant writer in the early 18th century literary circle. He deeply read Chuang-tzu and Buddhism and applied them to his sentences, and as a result, he left deep contemplations about human existence itself that are difficult to guess. This contemplation remained as a sentence and was read with vitality not only at the time but also at the end of the Joseon Dynasty. The identity of Jo Guimyeong as a writer has had a profound impact on the direction of modern research. For the past 30 years since the first study of Gwimyeong Cho, the theory of sentences of Gwimyeong Cho has been in depth, but the concept of 'will' remains unchanged. Cho Gwi-myeong himself emphasized that the most important thing in a sentence is meaning, and since he left detailed criticism on it, later researchers naturally paid attention to it as well. By the way, his sentence theory research, which is explained by Domunbunjil, self-reflection, 適意, and main intention, has been stagnant since sometime. Cho Gwi-myeong researchers also found the reason for the absence of work analysis to support the theory. Unlike previous studies, this paper intends to examine the sentences of Jo Gwi-myeong from a larger perspective. ‘Ui’ is a single word consistent with the thought of the precious name, which is widely and variously revealed in the basis of the spirit and the content of the sentence. Jo Gwi-myeong explored the universal truth of all things beyond the existing world through mind, and tried to include it in his sentences. The reasoning of Gwimyeong Cho, like Neo-Confucianism, was built on the concept of tranquility, but unlike that, it is based on observation and exploration of phenomena. Jo Gwi-myeong densely contained these thoughts in his 『Donggyejip』, ｢靜諦｣. The peculiar deviation of “refining” can be evaluated as being intentional and containing the true meaning of the thought of Jo Gwi-myeong. Gwimyeong Cho expands his thoughts to include the sky, human mind, body, and universe. In the process, what worked consistently was the will. The core of Jo Gwi-myeong is not a sentence, but a deep consideration of the phenomenon of all things and the problem of human origin. Sentence research is confined to researching only the 'tool' that Gwimyeong Jo tried to contain the reason. This is the point at which we need to consider what Gwimyeong Cho puts the most importance on in the process of writing a sentence, what he wanted to pursue with a sentence, and Gwimyeong Cho, a thinker who opened a new horizon beyond a writer.
