국문 초록

손으로 사물을 인식하고 물건을 제작하는 행위는 인간의 진화를 견인한 핵심 요소이며 신체와 정신의 온전한 삶을 위한 필수 활동이다. 본 논문은 현대 사회가 상실한 대중의 제작 능력 회복을 목표로 물건을 제작하는 손의 개념을 현재적 관점에서 새로 규정하고 이에 기초한 실천적 디자인 지침을 모색하여 공예품 개발에 적용한 연구이다. 공예품 제작 경험이 없는 일반 대중을 대상으로 디자인 방향성을 구체화하고 손가방 사례 연구를 병행하여 실효성 검증을 시도하였다. 제작 행위와 관련된 손의 기능과 특성 조사에 기초하여 손의 움직임, 촉각, 두뇌가 동시에 상호작용하며 창의적으로 제작하는 행위의 주체를 ‘생각하는 손’으로 정의하였다. 이를 공예품 디자인에 적용하기 위한 본질적 기준을 ① 맞붙임 구조를 사용하는 공예품, ② 다양한 재료를 경험하는 공예품, ③ 창의적 사고를 유도하는 과정 중심 공예품, 3가지로 특정 후 공예품 디자인에 적용 가능한 디자인 원칙 7가지를 도출하고 이에 부합하는 손가방 콘셉트 디자인 제안 및 시제품을 제작하였다. 공예품 제작 경험이 없는 일반인 3명을 선정하여 손가방 자가제작 실험을 진행하였고, 실험 결과물 평가 및 피실험자 설문조사와 인터뷰를 종합한 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 7가지 디자인 원칙에 준하여 설계된 손가방을 제작하는 활동은 손의 움직임과 감각 활성화를 돕고 상상력을 자극하여 창조적 제작 능력의 발현 및 향상의 기회를 제공하는 것으로 나타났다. 맞붙임 구조에 기초한 손가락 동작의 반복은 몰입을 유도하여 손의 리듬 체득을 돕고 손기술 향상에 대한 욕구를 자극한다. 다양한 재료의 물리적 접촉은 손의 감각을 일깨워 각 재료의 특성과 올바른 활용법 파악을 돕는다. 언제든 수정 가능한 과정 중심의 공예품 설계는 개인의 취향과 물건 사용 맥락에 따른 다양성의 여지를 제공하여 제작자의 탐구심을 높이고 상상력을 실천에 옮기도록 유도하는 것으로 사료된다. 본 논문에서 특정한 ‘생각하는 손’의 본질적 기준 및 디자인 원칙은 손 사용을 통해 감각과 두뇌를 활성화하는 공예품 개발의 척도가 될 수 있다. 본 연구가 대중 공예문화의 방향성을 제시하고 공예의 다양성 배양에 기여하기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

The act of perceiving and making objects by hand is a key factor in human evolution essential to full existence. In an attempt to restore the self handicraft culture for the general public, this study redefines the role of the hand and formulate appropriate design strategy from an integrated hand-sensory-brain perspective in handicraft. A case study of a craft handbag was conducted in parallel to verify its effectiveness. In this study, ‘Thinking hand’ was defined according to the theoretical investigation stating the hand as the core subject of making which simultaneously work with motor and sensory nerves as well as the brain. Three essential criteria specified in terms of craft design for the ‘Thinking hand’ were ① finger use based on opposable thumb structure, ② touch experience of various materials ③ process centered approach inducing creative thinking. Next, Seven design principles for the self-craft product were derived from the essential criteria in order to propose an handbag concept. A prototype was constructed verifying its feasibility. Three people novice in craft making participated in a self-craft experiment of the proposed handbag. The experimental results were combined with participants’ survey and interview. Results show that activity of making handbag designed according to the seven design principles adequately provided an opportunity to experience and improve making skills utilizing finger motion, sensory activation, and creative thinking. Repeated rhythmic finger motion offer immersive making experience of the hand while evoking desire to improve. Touching different materials revitalize the hand for understanding material property and its appropriate use. Process centered approach catered towards individual preferences give psychological room for higher sense of imagination to be put into practice. The essential criteria and design principles proposed in this study can be used as a measure for developing self-craft products to activate brain and bodily senses leading to a path for a higher sense of creativity. This study is expected to present a new direction for the craft culture and contribute to cultivation of diversity through making.
