유리지의 장신구에 관한 연구

국문 초록

한국 금속공예 1세대 대표 작가로 평가받는 유리지(1945~2013)는 진지한 사유로부터 출발해 탄탄한 기술력을 기반으로 풍부한 미감을 표출하는 작품을 제작함으로써 금속공예 조형적 표현의 지평을 확장하였다. 사후 10년이 지난 지금, 금속공예가 유리지의 작품세계와 그가 거둔 성과에 관한 연구와 평가는 이제 막 첫발을 뗀 상황으로, 특히 그의 장신구 작업은 아직 그 가치를 제대로 평가받지 못하고 있다. 그러므로 이 연구를 통해 유리지의 장신구를 종합적으로 정리하는 기회를 제공하고자 한다. 그러기 위해 유리지의 장신구를 시기별, 주제별로 미시적 시각에서 구분하여 분석하였다. 유리지는 활동 초기에 미국에서 습득한 선진적 공예기법과 인체를 조형적 모티브로 한 장신구를 제작하였다. 그리고 작가로서 성숙해 가는 가운데 자기 확인의 방법으로 자연을 작업 주제로 채택하면서부터 서정적 표현이 주류를 이루는 장신구로 작업 방향을 옮겼다. 이 연구로써 인체, 가족, 자연 이미지 등 그가 다룬 주제들의 주요 조형 언어가 가진 의의를 심도 있게 이해하고 유리지 작품 특유의 정교하고 세련된 미감에서 풍기는 서정성의 근원을 확인하고자 했다. 한편 간접적 관여의 방식으로 실험했던 일부 상업적 성격을 띠는 장신구에 관한 조사도 더불어 진행함으로써 유리지의 장신구를 다각적 시각에서 심층적으로 탐구하고자 하였다. 이상의 결과로 장신구 작가로서의 유리지를 이해하고, 그의 장신구를 하나하나 되짚어 봄으로써 한 작가가 구축한 작품세계에 보다 더 통합적으로 다가가 보고자 하였다.

영문 초록

Lizzy Yoo(1945-2013) is recognized as one of the most representative artists among the first generation of Korean metalwork artists. She expanded the horizon of formative expression in metalwork with her works of profound aesthetic expressions, inspired by deep philosophical ideas and executed with impeccable skills. Ten years have passed since her death, but we have barely taken first steps when it comes to research and evaluation of Lizzy Yoo's artistic world and legacies as a metalwork artist. In particular, her legacy in the field of jewelry has not yet received proper assessment. In light of this fact, this study provides an opportunity to systematically review Lizzy Yoo’s jewelry. The analysis involves a micro-level categorization of Lizzy Yoo’s jewelry by period and then by theme. During her early years, Lizzy Yoo produced jewelry with the human body as her formative motif, using advanced techniques she acquired in the United States. As she matured as an artist, she sought self-affirmation by adopting nature as the main theme, and consequently shifted the direction of her jewelry work to that of lyrical expression. This study seeks to provide an in-depth understanding of the meaning behind her main formative language, which consisted of themes such as the human body, family and natural images. In doing so, the study hopes to help locate the source of lyricism we experience in Lizzy Yoo's elaborate and sophisticated aesthetics. The study also surveyed Lizzy Yoo’s experimentation with indirect involvement in semi-commercial jewelry, in order to illuminate the world of her jewelry from multiple perspectives. By illuminating her jewelry pieces one by one, this study will help us understand Lizzy Yoo as a jewelry artist as well as the artistic world that she was able to create as an artist.
