비디오 속도: 선불교의 사상을 통한 해석

국문 초록

본 논문은 관객 참여적 성질이 있는 영상기록물을 비디오설치작품으로 표현한 사례를 백남준과 빌 비올라의 비디오아트 작품을 통해 비교분석하였더니 두 명의 작가 작품 ‘영사속도’에 담긴 ‘선불교 사상 반영’ 의미에 대한 차이점과 ‘상호 연관성’이 있었다. 자세히는 이 두 명의 작가가 속도차이에 따라 선불교사상을 어떠한 방법으로 해석하고 있는지 분석하였다. 하루의 시간(24시간)은 누구에게나 똑같이 주어지지만 그 시간을 보내는 방법, 시간의 체감은 각기 다르다. 이렇게 우리는 살아가며 서로 다른 시간을 보내고 있으며 이러한 시간은 선불교에서 주장하는 각자만의 수행을 통해 터득할 수 있는 깨달음과 같이 표현될 수 있다. 여기에서의 ‘각자’는 넓은 의미로 ‘모두’로 해석할 수 있으며 모든 사람들에게 깨달음을 줄 수 있는 선불교를 통해 각기 보내고 있는 시간(인생-삶과 죽음)과 그 시간 안의 ‘주관적 특성’은 정상적인 속도가 아닌 빠른 속도⋅느린 속도와 같은 ‘시간의 변형’을 통해 해석할 수 있었다. 결국 이러한 특수성과 다양성을 받아들여 해석하는 작품(감상)은 누구나 부처가 될 수 있다는 선불교 사상을 나타낼 수 있었다. 이러한 실제 시간은 관객 참여적 비디오설치작품을 통해 경험(참선)할 수 있다. 이렇게 설치, 참여적 성격을 가지고 있는 비디오아트를 통해 관객 ‘참여적 성질’과 ‘비디오 속도’, ‘선불교 사상’간의 연관성에 대해 연구하였다. 또한 관객참여를 통해 각자가 보내고 있는 주관적 시간에 대한 근거를 물리학, 철학의 학문적 배경을 통해 찾아봄으로써 시간에 대하여 논의할 수 있었다. 비올라가 자신의 작업이 ‘개인적인 발견과 깨달음의 과정’ Michael, R. (2013). 뉴미디어 아트. 시공사. 161. 이라고 말한 것과 같이 각각 느끼고 있는 현 시간과 인생에 대한 의미, 인간 존재에 대한 근원적 물음과 함께 삶과 죽음에 대한 의미, 스스로의 감정 등에 대해 집중하며 주관적으로 시간을 인식할 수 있다. 이를 통해 참선(參禪)하여 개인성(個人性)과 같은 각자가 가지는 삶의 의미에 대한 깨달음을 통해 반성적사고와 자아성찰을 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper compared and analyzed the case of expressing video records with audience participation as video installation works by Nam June Paik and Viola Paik through video art works, and there was a difference and interrelationship between the meaning of “reflection of Zen Buddhism ideas” contained in the work of two artists, “Consular Speed.” In detail, we analyzed how these two writers express Zen Buddhism thoughts according to the difference in speed. Everyone is given the same amount of time (24 hours), but the way they spend that time and the feeling of time are different. In this way, we spend different times in our lives, and this time can be expressed like an enlightenment that can be learned through each of the performances that Zen Buddhism claims. Here, 'each' can be interpreted as 'everyone' in a broad sense, and the time (life-life and death) spent by individuals and the 'subjective characteristics' within that time could be expressed through 'transformation of time' such as high speed and slow speed, not through normal speed. In the end, works (appreciation) that accept and express these specificities and diversity could express the idea of Zen Buddhism that anyone can become a Buddha. This real time can be experienced (for reference) through video installation works involving the audience. Through video art with a participatory character, the relationship between the audience's 'participatory nature', 'video speed', and 'pre-Buddhist ideology' was studied. In addition, time could be discussed by looking for the basis for the subjective time each person is spending through the academic background of physics and philosophy through audience participation. As mentioned above, each person can recognize their own time that flows subjectively by focusing on the meaning of life, death, and their feelings, along with the fundamental questions about the present time and life they feel about human existence. Through this, reflective thinking and self-reflection can be made through 參禪 and realization of each person's meaning of life, such as individuality.
