국문 초록

최근 국립고궁박물관이 발간한 보고서 『조선왕실의 현판』 I(2020)와 특별전 〈조선의 이상을 걸다-궁중현판〉(2022)을 통해 널리 알려지게 된 〈활자 주조를 감독한 신하 명단을 새긴 현판[鑄字監董諸臣題名錄 懸板]〉(이하 〈제명록 현판〉)에 조선 초기의 과학기술자 장영실蔣英實, ?~?의 생년生年과 자字, 본관本貫이 기재된 사실이 확인되었다. 이에 따르면 장영실은 1393년(태조 2)생으로, 자가 실보實甫이며 본관은 경주慶州이다. 이 〈제명록 현판〉은 1858년(철종 7) 만들어져 창경궁 안 주자소에 걸렸던 것으로, 원본은 1794년(정조 18)에서 1796년(정조 20)을 전후한 시기 만들어졌을 것으로 여겨진다. 여기에는 장영실뿐만 아니라 조선 초기 금속활자 제작에 간여했던 많은 인물의 인적 사항이 실려 있다. 이 논문에서는 장영실의 인적 사항을 포함한 〈제명록 현판〉에 기록된 사실의 신빙성 여부를 검토하면서, 〈제명록 현판〉의 사료적 가치를 살펴보고자 하였다. 『국조문과방목國朝文科榜目』, 『등과록登科錄』, 『국조보감國朝寶鑑』, 『명신록名臣錄』, 『선생안先生案』 같은 관련 기록에 등장하는 조선 초기 인물의 인적 사항을 〈제명록 현판〉과 대조해 보았을 때, 〈제명록 현판〉에 기재된 것과 일치하는 사례는 아주 드물다. 이는 위에 열거한 기록이 〈제명록 현판〉의 근거가 아니었음을 뜻한다. 그렇다고 할 때 〈제명록 현판〉에 기재된 장영실의 인적 사항도 맞다고 단번에 인정하기는 어려워진다. 조선 후기에는 조선 초기의 제도를 상고하여 국가 전례를 처결하려 하면서도, 정작 조선 초기의 인물과 사실은 많이 잊혀 있었다. 이러한 시대의 간극이 〈제명록 현판〉에 드러나 있다. 하지만 그렇다고 해서 〈제명록 현판〉의 사료가치를 폄하할 수만은 없다. 18세기 후반, 나아가 19세기 중반에 이르러서도 조선 초기의 문화 사업을 계승하고자 하는 왕실과 조정 차원의 의지가 담겨있을 뿐만 아니라, 장영실을 비롯해 많은 조선 초기 인물들의 인적 사항을 새롭게 검토할 수 있는 자료이기 때문이다.

영문 초록

Recently, the National Palace Museum of Korea published its research catalog Hanging Boards of the Joseon Royal Court and held the special exhibition Hyeonpan: Hanging Boards Inscribing the Ideals of Joseon. Through these two episodes, a hanging board with the list of officials who supervised the casting of metal type(鑄字監董諸臣題名錄 懸板) became widely known to the public and it was discovered that the hanging board also bears the birth year, courtesy name, and the clan origin of Jang Yeong- sil(蔣英實, ?~?), a scientist and engineer of the early Joseon period. According to this, Jang Yeong-sil was born in 1393, his courtesy name was Silbo, and his clan origin was Gyeongju. This plaque was made in 1858 (the 7th year of the reign of King Cheoljong) and hung in the Jujaso (Bureau of Type Casting and Printing) within Changgyeonggung Palace. The original is presumed to have been produced around 1794 - 1796 (the 18th to the 20th year of the reign of King Jeongjo). The plaque contains not only Jang Yeong-sil, but the personal information of many people who were involved in the production of metal movable type in the early Joseon period. In this paper, I examined the credibility of the inscription on the hanging board, including Jang Yeong-sil’s personal information, and explored its historical value. When I compared the personal information of the early Joseon officials, who appeared in multiple records that contained a substantial amount of the personal information of different officials, with that of the plaque, there was little that exactly matched. It indicates that those records were not the source for the hanging board. Hence, the veracity of the personal information attributed to JANG on the inscribed hanging board is notably challenging to ascertain. In the late Joseon period, while conducting the national rites by reviewing the systems of the early Joseon period, the actual government officials and truths of the early Joseon period had largely been forgotten. This gap of verifiable information of the times is clearly revealed on the hanging board. This, however, does not imply that the historical value of the plaque can be denigrated. It not only encapsulates the determination of the royal family and the government in the late 18th century to the mid-19th century to carry forward cultural initiatives of the early Joseon period, but also serves as a resource facilitating a reevaluation of the personal information pertaining to numerous officials of the early Joseon government, including Jang Yeong-sil.
