국문 초록

2014년에 대한제국역사관으로 개방된 석조전은 여러 사람들의 협업으로 실내가 재현되었다. 본고는 석조전 건립 당시의 실내장식가 리처드 굴번 로벨Richard Goulburn Lovell, 1861~1937이 맡았던 실내 장식 경향과 컬러 컨셉 등을 분석하여 석조전 실내 재현을 재고했다. 이를 위해 로벨이 남긴 인테리어 디자인 작품집을 중심으로 석조전과 유사한 실내장식 경향을 파악했다. 로벨의 작품집 속에서 석조전과 유사한 양식을 가진 디자인을 선별했다. 이는 양식적으로는 18세기 후반 신고전주의 양식을 재해석한 네오 조지안 양식으로서 20세기 초반 주로 ‘아담 스타일’로 일컬어지는 것이다. 또한 현존하는 사진과 텍스트 사료를 보다 면밀히 분석하여 현재 석조전 접견실의 커튼, 카펫, 패브릭 컬러와 다른 컬러 컨셉을 추정했다. 사진 사료 속 가리개를 확대하고 국립고궁박물관에 소장된 유물인 녹색 가리개와 대조하여 그 패턴이 같은 것임을 밝혔다. 텍스트 사료에 근거하여 접견실의 지배색을 황금색으로 추정하여 접견실의 컬러 컨셉을 ‘그린+골드’로 제안했다. 로벨은 공간 전체의 조화를 고려해 컬러의 그라데이션과 콘트라스트를 강조했는데 석조전 접견실의 경우 그라데이션에 무게를 둔 것으로 보인다. 본고에서는 로벨과 메이플사Maple & Co.의 협업으로 탄생한 석조전 귀빈 대기실이 담긴 메이플사의 광고를 처음으로 공개했고 이를 통해 1913년 귀빈 대기실의 모습을 살폈다. 천장의 플라스터는 아담 스타일로 꾸며졌고 가구와 소품이 2023년 현재 보다 많았다. 의자의 형태와 배치 방식, 샹들리에의 형태 등이 기존과 다르며 카펫이 깔려있음을 알 수 있다. 앞으로도 새로운 사료의 발굴과 분석을 통해 석조전을 비롯한 근대 건축물의 실내장식을 보다 깊이 이해할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

The Seokjojeon Hall at Deoksugung Palace was inaugurated for public access in 2014, establishing itself as the Daehan Empire History Museum through collaborative efforts that contributed to its realization. is study examines the interior decoration of Seokjojeon Hall by analyzing the trend and color concepts of the original decorator, Richard Goulburn Lovell, through his works, including Home Interiors (1913). Similar interior designs to those of Seokjojeon Hall were selected from his aforementioned work collections. The decorative style can be termed as “Neo-Georgian”. This style is the reinterpretation of the late 18th century Neo-Classical style, and in the early 20th century it was often referred to as the “Adam Style”. Furthermore, a closer analysis was conducted on existing photographs and textual materials to discern the current color concepts of the curtains, carpets, and fabric colors in the audience chamber of Seokjojeon Hall, contrasting them with other color concepts. rough the enlargement of the interior photograph of Seokjojeon and a meticulous comparison with the corresponding green screen archived in the National Palace Museum, verication ensued, arming the identical nature of the patterns in both representations. Additionally, drawing from textual sources, it was conjectured that the primary color of the reception room was gold. Consequently, a color concept for the audience chamber was posited, suggesting a combination of green and gold. Lovell underscored the importance of color gradation and contrast in mindful curation of the overall spatial harmony. However, in the context of the Seokjojeon audience chamber, it appears that particular emphasis was placed on achieving a nuanced gradation. In this article, the first-ever unveiling of Maple & Co.'s advertisement featuring the Seokjojeon Reception Room, born from the collaboration between Lovell and Maple & Co., allowed for a vivid portrayal of the appearance of the reception room in 1913. The ceiling plaster was adorned in the Adam style, and the furniture and accessories were more abundant than in the current year of 2023. Dierences can be observed in the form and arrangement of chairs, the shape of chandeliers, and the presence of carpets, all distinct from the existing arrangement. A deeper understanding of the interior decoration of modern architectural structures, including that of Seokjojeon, is anticipated to be achieved through the discovery and analysis of new historical resources.
