국문 초록

‘이타성’(利他性, altruism)은 나보다 남을 먼저 생각하는 성질, 혹은 직·간접적 이득이나 보상 없이 자신보다 남을 먼저 생각하여 행동의 목적을 타인의 행복과 이득에 두는 것으로 정의된다. 이러한 이타성은 “네 이웃을 네 몸같이 사랑하라”(마 19:19)와 같이 전통적으로 종교에서 중시되어온 미덕이었다. 이타성과 협력은 문화 집단의 형성에서부터 산업 혁명과 정보 혁명에까지 이르는 혁신을 주도하기도 하였다. 이 연구는 이타성이라는 주제를 인간의 본성 속에 함께 내재하는 ‘악함’, ‘폭력성’에 반대되는 개념인 ‘선함’이나 ‘관대함’ 혹은 ‘도덕성’의 의미로 논의를 전개한다. 특히 이 연구는 생물학적 관점에서 이타성이 어떻게 주요하게 전개되는지를 개괄적으로 바라보고 학제적 이타성 담론 형성의 모색을 목적으로 한다.

영문 초록

Altruism is the quality of prioritizing others over oneself, or the behavior driven by the goal of enhancing others’ happiness and wellbeing, devoid of any direct or indirect personal gain or reward. Historically this quality has been underscored as the virtue within religious teachings, exemplified by principles like “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 19:19). Altruism and cooperation have also driven innovations ranging from the formation of cultural groups to the industrial and information revolutions. This study delves into altruism from the standpoint of goodness, generosity, and morality, juxtaposed against the evil and violence that are inherent human nature. Specifically, the focus is on elucidating how biological research can contribute to the discourse on altruism and on suggesting a proposal of interdisciplinary discourse surrounding altruistic cooperation.
