국문 초록

윌리암 마틴의 『천도소원』은 청말 개신교 변증서로서 동아시아의 문화에 기독교 전파와 수용이라는 면에서 중요한 역할을 하는 책이다. 특히 이성과 도덕 위에 세워진 동아시아 문화에 자연신학적 변증, 역사 문헌적 변증 그리고 성서 계시신학적 변증의 방법을 통해 기독교가 더 이상 서양인만의 종교가 아니라 동아시아인의 종교임을 주장하고 있다. 다시 말해 천도로서 기독교 진리는 동과 서를 아우르는 것으로 오직 성서의 계시에 의해서만 완성될 수 있음을 밝혀 나가고 있다. 마틴은 이런 목적에서 동아시아인에게 익숙한 자연신학 변증을 통해 서양 과학의 우수성을 밝히고 기독교 하나님의 존재를 증명하는 방법을 찾아 나가고자 했다. 다시 말해, 중국 종교의 자연종교적 특성을 배척하는 것이 아니라 그 속에서 주재자 하나님을 모습을 추구한 것이다. 이 때문에 『천도소원』의 자연신학 변증은 계시종교로서 기독교가 어떻게 중국 종교와 같고 다른지를 구분하고 기독교가 동아시아 문화에서 만들어갈 길을 제시한다고 볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

W.A.P. Martin’s Evidences of Christianity is an apology for Protestantism in the Late Qing and plays an important role in the spread and acceptance of Christianity on the culture of East Asia. In particular, through the methods of natural theological apologetics, historical and literary apologetics, and revealed theological apologetics in East Asian culture built on reason and morality, it is asserted that Christianity is no longer a religion only for Westerners, but a religion for East Asians. In other words, it is revealing that the truth of Christianity as Tian Dao(天道) was not the property of either East or West and can only be understoon through the revelation of the Bible. For this purpose, Martin tried to find a way to reveal the excellence of Western science and prove the existence of a Christian God through natural theology apologetics familiar to East Asians. It did not reject the natural religious characteristics of Chinese religion, but focused on the image of the Lord God. For this reason, the natural theological apologetics in Evidences of Christianity can distinguish how Christianity as a religion of revelation is the same as and different from Chinese religion, and suggests a way for Christianity to be built in East Asian culture.
