중원지역 주요 장식기와의 양상과 기와 분류 체계 문제

국문 초록

기와를 분류하는 방법은 여러 가지가 있을 수 있는데, 지붕의 면을 구성하는 평기와와 막새를 제외한 것을 지금도 ‘특수기와’로 구분하기도 한다. 또 귀면문이 있는 기와의 경우 지붕의 여러 위치에 사용되고 있음에도 불구하고, 그 특이한 형태와 상징적 의미를 중시하여 소위 ‘귀면와’로 통칭하여 분류하고 서술하기도 한다. 이는 본고에서 집중적으로 조사‧관찰한 중원지역 출토 기와도 예외는 아니다. 이에 따라 본고에서는 먼저 기와의 기능과 사용위치를 고려한 분류체계와 명칭을 다시 한 번 정립해보고자 하였다. 기와는 기능적으로 보아, 크게는 비를 막기 위한 ‘지붕 축조용 기와’와 지붕의 장엄성과 장식성을 더하기 위한 ‘지붕 장식용 기와’로 대별할 수 있으며, 한편으로는 사용 위치에 따라 평기와와 막새‧마루기와‧서까래기와로 구분할 수 있다. 지붕 축조용 기와에는 평기와와 마루 축조용 기와가 포함되며, 지붕 장식용 기와는 이들을 제외한 나머지 즉 암‧수막새와 각종 마루장식기와, 서까래기와 등이 있다. 특히 ‘귀면문’ 기와는 마루끝부분과 처마 모서리의 사래부분에 사용되는 것으로서, 문양만을 중시하여 기와를 구분하는 것이 적합하지 않음을 밝히었다. 한편 중원지역의 마루암막새는 일반적인 암막새와 별도의 와범으로 제작되고 있으며, 귀면문 마루끝장식기와와 사래기와는 이와 달리 동범으로 제작된 후 아랫부분을 잘라내어 사래기와로 사용한 예를 확인하였다.

영문 초록

There can be many ways to classify roof tiles, but those excluding flat roof tiles and roof tiles that make up the roof surface are still classified as ‘special tiles’. In addition, in the case of tiles with ghost faces, although they are used in various places on the roof, they are collectively classified and described as so-called ‘ghost tiles’, with emphasis on their unique shape and symbolic meaning. The roof tiles excavated from the Jungwon regional area, which were intensively investigated and observed in this paper, are no exception. Accordingly, in this paper, we tried to establish the classification system and name once again considering the function and location of use of roof tiles. From a functional point of view, roof tiles can be roughly divided into 'roof construction tiles' to prevent rain and 'roof decoration tiles' to add solemnity and decorativeness to the roof. Depending on the location of use, it can be divided into flat tiles, antefix, ridge tiles, and rafter tiles. Tiles for roof construction include flat roof tiles and ridge tiles for roof construction, and tiles for roof decoration include female and male antefix, various ridge decoration tiles, and rafter tiles. In particular, it was revealed that 'ghost-faced' roof tiles were used at the ends of the ridge and at the corners of the eaves, and it was not appropriate to roughly classify the tiles based on the designation. On the other hand, woman ridge tiles of the Jungwon regional area are made of a different tile making frame(Wabeom) from common woman antefix, and unlike the decorative roof tiles and Sarae-tiles with ghost faces, examples of using them as Sarae-tiles were confirmed by cutting off the lower part after being made of the same making frame(Wabeom).
