국문 초록

이 글은 최근 관심이 증대되고 있으나 아직까지는 초보적 수준인 한국 고고학에서의 네트워크분석이 발전적으로 활용될 수 있는 논의의 기초를 마련하고자 작성한 것이다. 이를 위해 네트워크분석 특히 사회관계망분석(Social Network Analysis)의 발전 과정과 함께 국내에 사회관계망분석이 소개된 이후 다양한 학문 분야에서 이용하게 되는 과정을 간략하게 살펴보았다. 그리고 고고학의 네트워크분석 경향(외국)과 국내 연구에서의 적용 사례를 검토하였다. 사회관계망분석은 사회학의 대표적인 연구 방법으로, 구조적이고 관계적인 측면에서 복합적인 사회 현상을 기술하고 탐색하며 이해하는 데 적합하다. 개별적 속성이 아니라 관계에 주목한다는 특징은 사회관계망분석이 사회학을 넘어 여러 분야에서 다양한 유형의 네트워크 데이터를 분석하는 도구로써 폭넓게 이용되는 중요한 요인이 되었다. 고고학에 네트워크분석이 도입된 지는 50년이 넘었지만, 대부분의 연구는 최근 10년 동안 발표되었다. 그간의 연구는 네트워크분석이 다양한 형태와 수준의 고고학 자료에서 감지되는 관계를 입체적으로 탐색할 수 있는 도구로써 매우 유용할 뿐만 아니라, 이를 통해 과거에 이루어진 자원과 정보의 흐름은 물론 사회적 구조의 특징과 변화 양상에 다각도로 접근할 수 있는 수단임을 보여주었다. 현재 고고학에서의 네트워크 연구는 적용 기법이나 연구 대상, 주제의 범위가 점차 확장되는 추세이다. 한국 고고학에서 네트워크분석은 2019년에 처음으로 시도된 바, 지금은 자료에 대한 분석 도구로 이용되기 시작한 단계에 불과하여 실제 적용 사례가 많지 않고, 분석법의 개념과 적용 가능성에 대한 논의가 상당한 부분을 차지하고 있다. 이로 인해 대부분의 연구는 새로운 결과를 도출하기 보다는 고고 자료에 대한 기존의 이해에 구체적 근거를 마련하고 개연성 있는 추론과 해석 범위의 확장 가능성을 제시하고 있는 상황이다. 그렇지만 점차 연구의 주제와 시공간적 범위는 물론 대상 자료와 분석기법이 확대되고 실제 분석 사례가 증가할 것으로 예상된다. 그러나 네트워크분석은 연구를 위한 도구일 뿐이다. 특정 단위 사이의 관계를 파악할 수 있지만, 관계의 성격이나 형태에 의미를 부여하는 것은 고고학적 이해가 기본이 되어야 한다. 결국 실제 그 결과에 대한 해석은 연구자의 몫이다.

영문 초록

This review was written to lay the groundwork for a progressive discussions on which network analysis in Korean archeology, which has recently gained attention but is still at a preliminary level. To this end, this paper briefly examines the development of network analysis, especially social network analysis(SNA), and the trends of SNA in archaeology in abroad and research cases in Korea. SNA is a representative research method in sociology, which is suitable for describing, exploring, and understanding complex social phenomena in structural and relational perspective. The characteristic of paying attention to relationships rather than individual attributes has become an important factor in the widespread use of SNA as a tool for analyzing network data of various types in various other fields beyond sociology. It has been more than 50 years since network analysis was introduced to archaeology, but most of the research has been published in the past 10 years. These studies have shown that network analysis is not only a very useful tool for exploring the relationships that can be detected in archaeological data of various forms and levels in multi-dimensional way, but also a means of accessing the flow of resources and information in the past, as well as the characteristics and changes of social structure in a variety of ways. Currently, network research in archaeology is expanding in terms of application techniques, research subjects, and the scope of topics. In Korean archeology, network analysis was first attempted in 2019, and it is still in the early stages of being used as an analysis tool for data, so discussions on the concepts and applicability of analysis methods occupy a significant portion. As a result, most studies are in the position of providing concrete evidence for the existing understanding of the data and suggesting the possibility of expanding the range of plausible inferences and interpretations, rather than denying the existing achievements or deriving completely new results. In the future, it is expected that the research topics, spatial and temporal scope, target data, and analysis techniques will be expanded, and the number of actual analysis cases will increase. However, network analysis is only a tool for research. It can identify relationships between specific units, but it is essential to have an archaeological understanding to give meaning to the nature or form of the relationship. Ultimately, it is up to the researcher to interpret the actual results.
