신재효 사설에 나타난 하층 남성의 삶과 성

국문 초록

신재효(1812~1884년)의 판소리 사설 여섯 마당(「춘향가」·「심청가」·「토별가」·「박타령」·「적벽가」·「변강쇠가」)에는 조선후기 다양한 인물 군상이 등장한다. 각 작품은 주요 인물뿐만 아니라 상층 양반에서 하층 천민까지 다종다양한 보조 인물을 두루 담아내고 있다. 특히 신재효 사설과 춘화를 통해서 하층민의 애절한 애정행위, 성생활을 엿볼 수 있다. 이것은 구체적인 서사와 묘사는 다소 과장되고 희화된 것일 수는 있겠으나, 하층민의 성에 대한 절박한 갈구와 절실한 행위만큼은 핍진하게 보여준다. 신재효의 사설과 춘화(<노비지애>와 <노비지정>)는 한 장면, 한 장면에서 겉에 드러난 하층민의 성희와 속에 담긴 비애를 헤아릴 수 있는 뛰어난 작품이다. 신재효 사설을 비롯한 판소리 예술은 질펀하면서 스산한 하층민의 심신을 담아낸 생활사 자료인 것이다. 이처럼 신재효 사설에서는 당대 사회적인 정황 속에서 성적 소외 대상이 될 수밖에 없는 하층 남성의 울분과 설움을 확인할 수 있다. 이것은 작품의 배경과 소품이 되었던 하층민의 삶과 애환을 헤아려볼 수 있는 기회를 마련해 준다. 신재효 사설은 기록물과 문예물에서 소외된 인물을 재구하고 이해할 수 있는 중요한 기초 자료로써 의미를 갖는다. 신재효의 사설을 풍요로운 자산으로 삼아서 조선후기 다양한 인물의 재구와 새로운 문예물의 창작은 연구자와 예술가에게 달려있는 것이다. 이처럼 신재효의 사설은 그 자체가 훌륭한 문학 작품이면서 새로운 예술 창작의 원석이라고 할 만하다.

영문 초록

There are various groups of characters from the latter half of Joseon in Shin Jae-hyo(1812~1884)'s six madangs of Pansori saseol(Chunhyangga, Shimcheongga, Tobyeolga, Baktaryeong, Jeokbyeokga, and Byeonggangsoiga). Each of those works offers a comprehensive depiction of auxiliary characters of all sorts from the upper class noblemen to the lower class humble people as well as the main characters. Shin's saseols and chunhwas especially provide a peep at the touching acts of affection and sex life of the lower class. Although their concrete narratives and descriptions may seem somewhat exaggerated and comical, they are very realistic in showing the common people's desperate desire and earnest acts for sex. His saseols and chunhwas(Nobijiae and Nobijijeong) are very remarkable works with each page presenting the play for sexual pleasure of the lower class on the outside and their sorrow hidden in it on the inside. Pansori art such as his saseols provides data about life history, depicting the body and soul of the slovenly and restless lower class. Shin's saseols show the pent-up rage and lamentation of the lower-class men that were forced to be the objects of sexual alienation in the social context of the times, offering an opportunity to understand the life, joy, and sorrow of the lower class that made the backgrounds and props of such works. In fact, his saseols are significant as important basic data for reconsidering and understanding those who were excluded from documents and literary works. It is up to researchers and artists to take Shin's saseols as rich assets, rebuild various characters from the latter half of Joseon, and create new literary works. It is no exaggeration that his saseols are outstanding literary works themselves and, at the same time, rough stone for new art creation.
