판소리 도제집단과 수제자의 역할

국문 초록

본 논문은 현장에서 활동하고 있는 판소리인들을 중심으로 오늘날 판소리 전승이 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지를 살피고 있다. 판소리 전승은 스승의 가르침과 이를 전승하는 제자집단, 즉 도제집단을 통하여 이루어진다. 따라서 스승과 도제집단의 상호작용을 중점적으로 분석할 필요가 있다. 이를 위하여 연구자는 다수의 국악인과 판소리인에 대한 심층조사를 하였다. 그 결과 도제집단에 대한 스승의 다양한 평가와 구분과정을 파악할 수 있었고, 이에 따른 도제집단의 계층적 분화 또한 파악할 수 있었다. 그 중에서도 연구자는 도제집단의 계층화된 서열관계의 가장 상위에 위치하면서 스승과 도제집단을 매개하는 수제자의 역할에 주목하였다. 수제자는 스승의 고유한 예술적 코드를 전승하는 핵심 제자로서 학습과 사회활동에 있어 스승을 가장 측근에서 수발하고, 경우에 따라 스승의 권한을 대행하기도 한다. 또한 도제집단의 리더로서 스승의 부재 시 도제집단을 대표하는 대표자가 되며, 스승의 예술을 전승하고 스승이 만들어 놓은 판소리 관련 단체를 유지 발전시키거나 새롭게 단체를 만들어 스승의 예술적 업적을 기리고 해당 도제집단을 활성화시키는 역할을 수행한다. 수제자를 중심으로 한 도제집단의 이러한 활동들은 스승과의 긴밀한 상호작용을 통해 이루어진다. 이는 사제 간 상호작용이 때로는 직접적이기도 하고 때로는 작고 시에 유지를 받드는 형태처럼 간접적이기도 하지만, 두 경우 모두 지속적으로 이어지고 있다. 이는 오늘날 판소리가 전승되는 핵심적인 맥락을 구성하고 있다.

영문 초록

Focusing on Pansori singers, this paper discusses the way in which Pansori is transmitted. As Pansori is transmitted through teachers' instruction to pupils' group, the paper emphasizes on interactions between a teacher and his(or her) apprentice group. In order to analyse the interactions, I conducted in-depth research by having an interview with many Korean classical musicians including Pansori performers. Based on the research, this paper argues there exists various student evaluations and the students are differentiated by the evaluations. In addition, it argues the best disciple, who is placed on the top stratum, plays an important role to mediate the teacher and the apprentice group. As an influential figure to transmit the teacher's original art propensity, the best disciple attends the teacher very closely and acts for him in some cases. The best disciple also plays a role to lead the members of the apprentice group, acting as a proxy for the teacher during his absence. The best student has more duties: to transmit the teacher's art propensity, to honor his artistic accomplishment, and to vitalize the apprentice group. An apprentice group's activities like these are fulfilled through the interaction between disciples and their teacher. This interaction has two kinds. One is direct interaction, and another is direct one. If the teacher has passed away, the interaction is kept indirectly by carrying out the wishes of the deceased. Both of them still persists, and this is a critical context within which Pansori is transmitted today.
