국문 초록

19세기 판소리는 예사롭지 않은 전환의 양상을 겪었다. 판소리 열두 마당 가운데 전승과 탈락으로 운명이 갈라지는 한편 사설의 측면에 있어서도 적지 않은 변화가 일어났다. <적벽가>의 경우도 그러했다. 화용도로 패주하던 조조를 관우가 풀어주는 데 초점이 두어졌던 <화용도타령>은 19세기 중반을 넘어가면서 전반부에 다양한 삽화가 추가되고, 그에 따라 서사구조도 바뀌고 이름도 <적벽가>로 바뀌게 되었다. ‘도원결의’, ‘삼고초려’, ‘박망파전투’, ‘장판교전투’와 같은 <<삼국지연의>>의 삽화가 새롭게 들어간 것이다. 지금까지 이런 현상은 19세기 후반 양반좌상객의 취향을 반영한 결과로 범박하게 이해되어 왔다. 하지만 그런 전환의 과정은 양반층의 영향력이라는 이유만으로는 설명하기 어려운, 날카로운 시대정신과 면밀한 서사전략에 의한 산물이었다. 서편제에 속하는 정응민 바디는 ‘공명의 지략’에 초점을 맞춘 삽화가 선별․배치된 반면, 동편제에 속하는 박봉술 바디는 ‘유비를 중심으로 한 촉나라 장수의 의로움’에 초점을 맞춘 삽화가 선별․배치되고 있었던 것이다. 그런 두 갈래의 전환 양상은 전란이 아득한 기억으로서가 아니라 구체적인 현실로 실감되던 19세기 후반의 시대 분위기를 반영한 것이기도 했다. 임술민란, 동학운동과 같은 내부의 전란, 태평천국의 난, 아편전쟁과 같은 외부의 전란, 그리고 해안에 수시로 출몰하던 이양선 및 병인양요가 가져다 준 전란의 공포가 그것이다. 그때, 판소리 광대들은 전란의 위협이 코앞에 닥친 불안한 시대를 구제할 수 있는 진정한 영웅은 과연 누구일 것인가를 <적벽가>를 통해 다각도로 제시해보고자 했다. 전쟁에 끌려나온 병졸들의 참혹한 현실의 재현, 그리고 조조와 같은 지배층이 보이던 교만하고 불의에 찬 행위에 대한 분노의 목소리와 함께. 그런 맥락에서 19세기 후반 <적벽가>의 전환 양상을 읽을 때, 거기에 담긴 시대정신은 결코 예사롭지 않은 것이었다. 그리고 그 극점에 신재효가 개작한 <적벽가>도 놓여 있다.

영문 초록

Pansori goes through uncommon aspect of transition in the nineteenth century. Pansori faces fatal division either passing down as one of Pansori Twelve Madang or being left out. On the other hand in terms of narrative there occurred quite a few changes. Jeokbyeokga had the same situation. Hwayongdo Taryeong that was focused on Gwanwu released Jojo, who fled to Hwayongdo, over the mid-nineteenth century was supplemented by various illustrations in the former half of the period. Hence it changed its narrative structure and renamed as Jeokbyeokga. Illustrations such as ‘Dowon Determination’, ‘Samgochoryeo', ‘Bakmangpa Battle’, ‘Jangpangyo Battle’ from Samgukjiyeoneui were inserted. The phenomenon was largely considered as a result of reflecting aristocrats or Yangban's taste in the latter half of the nineteenth century. However the procedure of the transition cannot be described only by the influence of Yangban social class, so it was the product of sharp spirit of the time and elaborate narrative strategy. Jeongeungmin body that belongs to Seopyeongje selected and arranged illustration focusing on Gongmyeong's resourcefulness, while Bakbongsul body that belongs to Dongpyeonje selected and arranged illustration focusing on righteousness of generals of the country Chok like Yubi. These two changing phases were not the reflection of remote memory of war but of periodical atmosphere of the late nineteenth century, which was concrete reality. Inner wars such as Imsul revolt, Donghak movement, outside wars such as the Taiping Rebellion, Anglo-Chinese Wars(Opium wars), and foreign ships showed up on the coast and the fear of war due to Byeongin invasion by France was evident. Pansori actors attempted to suggest from various angles through Jeokbyeokga who would be the true heroes that could rescue the unstable period. With representation of wretched reality of soldiers who were forced to fight in the war, and their angry voice against arrogant, unjust ruling class like Jojo, the spirit of the age in the changing aspect of Jeokbyokga in the late nineteenth century was never ordinary. Shin Jae-hyo's adaptation of Jeokbyeokga was there in the climax of the transition time.
