국문 초록

창작판소리 <예수전>은 실전판소리 작품의 복원과 새로운 판소리 작품의 창작에 힘썼던 박동진 명창이 직접 곡을 붙이고 가창하여 널리 알려진 작품이다. 그래서 다른 창작판소리 작품들에 비해 학계의 주목을 많이 받았고, 박동진 명창 관련 논문 또는 창작판소리 관련 논문에서 자주 언급되었다. 그러나 이제까지 한 번도 이 작품이 자세히 연구된 적은 없었다. 아마도 이 작품이 처음 논단에 올라왔을 때 부정적인 평가를 받았기 때문에 일찍부터 연구자들의 관심 밖으로 밀려나 버린 듯하다. 그런데 <예수전>에 대한 과거의 부정적인 평가는 창작판소리에 대한 이해의 부족에서 비롯된 것이다. 적층문학 또는 구비문학인 전통판소리와 개인문학 또는 기록문학인 창작판소리의 근본적인 차이를 인정하지 않고, 전통판소리를 보는 시각에서 창작판소리를 보았기 때문에 <예수전>이나 그 밖의 다른 창작판소리 작품들이 모두 실패작처럼 보일 수밖에 없었다. 실제로 <예수전>은 1969년 첫 발표 이래 현재까지 40년 동안 꾸준히 향유되면서 창작판소리 작품도 전통판소리 작품 못지않은 성공을 거둘 수 있다는 것을 보여 준, 우수한 작품이다. 이제 편견을 버리고 공정한 시각에서 <예수전>을 재평가해야 하며, 그렇게 하기 위해서 먼저 작품을 자세히 연구해야 한다. 본 논문에서는 그 동안 잘 알려지지 않았던 <예수전>의 창작 경위와 자료의 실상을 밝히고, 작품을 세밀하게 분석했으며, 이를 바탕으로 작품의 성과와 판소리사적 의의를 고찰했다.

영문 초록

“Jesujeon” is a newly created pansori work which is written based on the Bible, by the popular playwright Ju Taeik (1918-1978). It consists of two parts: “The Birth of Jesus Christ” (1969) and “the Passion and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ” (1970-1972?). Both of them were arranged and performed by the great pansori singer Park Dongjin (1916-2003), who devoted himself to the restoration of the old pansori works which are not transmitted any more and to the creation of the new pansori works, and became one of his masterpieces being performed more than 300 times while he was alive. On this account, “Jesujeon” came into the spotlight and has been mentioned in many papers and articles. However, “Jesujeon” has not been studied yet. Since some critics and scholars underestimated this work in the 80s and in the 90s, there has been no scholar who tried to take a close look at this work. But, the underestimation of “Jesujeon” seems to be based on false premises. Many critics and scholars regarded the five traditional pansori works as the canon of pansori and made the qualities of the five traditional pansori works the criteria for all pansori works. Consequently, it was unavoidable that newly created pansori works including “Jesujeon” were underestimated because newly created pansori works are basically different from traditional pansori works. A traditional pansori work had been formed and transformed by many singers in a long time. A newly created pansori work, on the other hand, is written by an individual writer. So, it is natural that there is a fundamental difference between traditional pansori and newly created pansori. Now we must change our view of newly created pansori and revaluate “Jesujeon”. “Jesujeon” is one of the most important newly created pansori works, not because it is the masterpiece of the great pansori singer Park Dongjin, but because it is the first work that has proved that a newly created pansori work could be as successful as a traditional pansori work. This paper discusses the qualities of “Jesujeon” from a new point of view and examines its significance in pansori history.
