국문 초록

<심청가>는 서울예술단에 의하여 처음으로 브로드웨이식 뮤지컬로 재창작되었다. 아세아악극단과 반도가극단의 악/가극, 다수의 창극 작품, 윤이상과 김동진의 오페라 등 <심청가>는 이전에 이미 음악극으로 변모되었지만, 1997년 서울예술단의 <심청>은 뮤지컬로의 첫 번째 각색 작품이었다. 연출 유경환은 이 작품의 핵심주제를 ‘효의 실천’으로 파악하고, 작품의 재해석보다는 형상화 방식에 초점을 맞추었다. 그 결과 작품의 대사를 전부 삭제하고 처음부터 끝까지 노래와 음악으로 구성하였으며, 사실성 대신 무대의 수직성과 환상성을 강조하는 대형화자동화된 무대를 추구하였다. 작곡의 비중은 매우 높아져 최귀섭의 뮤지컬적 비젼이 적극적으로 발현되었다. 그에 따라 브로드웨이 뮤지컬의 음악어법이 적극적으로 사용되었으며 다양한 장르의 음악이 텍스트의 맥락에 맞게 배치되었다. 음악적 동기가 반복되고 2막에서 리프라이즈가 사용되어 음악을 통한 극적 의미화가 실현되었다. 그러나 음악의 강조는 결국 배우의 연기적 측면을 약화시켰으며, 상투적 내용전개와 더불어 이 작품의 근본목표인 세계적 뮤지컬로서의 도약을 유보시키는 결과를 가져왔던 것이다.

영문 초록

Pansori Shim-Chung Ga was firstly reproduced into a typical Broadway Musical by Seoul Performing Arts Company. Shim-Chung Ga was already adapted for various genres of Music Drama, namely Akgeuk by Asea Music Drama Company, Gageuk by Ban-do Opera company, a number of Changgeuk and the opera by Yun, Iee-sang and Kim, Dong-jin respectively, but it was the first attempt that the adaptation of Shim-Chung Ga for the modern musical was possibly materialized by Seoul Performing Arts Company. Ryu, Kyung-whan, the director proposed that the main theme of Shim-Chung Ga should be the completion of filial piety. He, therefore, focused on the unique way of representation on stage rather than the reinterpretation of the text. Consequently, musical Shim-Chung was composed of musical numbers and background music throughout the text without any line. The stage sets were designed on the basis of the automatic system for delivering the fantastic mood of the text. According to the director's strategy, the composition was given a great deal of weight on shaping the ideas of Shim-chung. The creative team entrusted Choi, Kyu-sub, both a popular young musical composer and a Korean popular song composer with the whole composition of musical Shim-chung. He believed that the proper province of making Musical was following the grammar of Broadway Musical. Owing to this vision, the musical language of Broadway Musical was positively used and various genres of music were placed to be suitable for the stream of the text. The repeated leitmotif and the reprise in Act 2 contributed to imply the dramatic significance through music. As a result, however, the great emphasis on music weakened the performance of actor/actress. Alongside this facet, it can be presumably said that the hackneyed way of interpretation was the crucial reason to hinder musical Shim-chung from being positioned as a worldwide musical.
