국문 초록

양서협동조합은 1970년대 말 부산에서 시작하여 마산, 대구, 광주, 서울, 울산, 수원 등 전국적으로 확산되어 창립․운영되다가 1980년을 전후로 한 시기에 소멸한, 책을 매개로 한 협동조합이다. 기본적으로 협동조합의 취지와 운영방식에 기초하고 있지만 정치적 운동체의 성격을 동반하고 있다는 점에서 국내의 양서협동조합은 일반적인 협동조합과는 상이하다. 협동조합은 상호자조와 경제민주주의를 기본 이념과 철학으로 삼는 결사체로서 기본적으로 조합원의 경제적 이익 및 사회적 처지를 개선하는 것이 조직의 목적이라고 할 수 있지만, 정치적 운동체의 성격을 띠고 있던 양서협동조합은 일반적인 협동조합의 관점에서 볼 때 이례적인 조직이다. 양서협동조합은 1970년대 말의 특수한 시대적 상황 속에서 민주화운동이 양서를 매개로 한 협동조합의 형태 속에 잠복, 발현된 것이라고 할 수 있다. 양서협동조합은 비판적 지식인 그룹의 등장, 해직 언론인을 비롯한 출판 운동의 부상 등의 사회적 조건들이 민주화운동의 대중적 기반 조성에 대한 요청과 결합하여 출범한 하나의 사회운동체였다. 가별 수녀가 설립한 ‘협동교육연구원’에서 협동조합의 철학과 운영 방식, 그리고 캐나다 안티고니쉬운동에 관해 배운 김형기는 협동조합과 민주화운동을 결합하는 사회운동조직을 구상하였고 이를 자신이 활동하던 지역의 민주인사들에게 제안함으로써 부산 양서협동조합이 꾸려지는 계기를 마련하였다. 이후 양서협동조합은 단기간에 전국적으로 확산되었는데 이는 양서를 매개로 한 협동조합운동이 폭압의 체제를 우회하여 대항하는 효과적인 사회운동체였음을 보여주는 증좌이다. 양서를 통해 독자대중을 각성시킴으로써 현실에 대한 비판적 사유를 공유하고 해방의 사상에 동화되도록 하는 일은 억압과 감시가 일상화된 독재체제하 사회변혁세력에게는 충분히 고안하고 동의할 만한 방법적 작업이었다. 이러한 방향 속에서 설립된 각 지역의 양서협동조합은 저마다의 지역적 성격에 따라 상이하게 꾸려지고 운영됨으로써 당대의 지역적 특징과 운동 역량을 드러내는 일종의 시금석이었던 것으로 보인다. 비록 짧은 기간 운영되었지만 1970년대 말 지역 사회의 성격과 운동역량을 보여준 양서협동조합은 80년대 이후 다양한 성격의 사회운동으로 계승․전환되었으며, 그 구성원들은 지역사회의 다양한 시민 그룹에서 활동을 이어갔다. 이 글은 당사자의 회고 수준에서 벗어나 양서협동조합의 출현 배경과 역사적 맥락을 살핌으로써 양서협동조합으로 이어진 협동조합의 전통과 이것이 양서를 매개로 한 민주화운동과 어떻게 결합되는지를 지역 양서협동조합의 사례를 통해 확인하였다. 이는 양서협동조합이 갖는 사회운동사적 성격과 의미를 지역 양서협동조합의 특징과 지역운동사의 맥락 속에서 살피는 작업이라고 할 수 있으며, 양서협동조합운동의 전후 맥락, 그것의 전체상을 좀 더 입체적으로 살피는 작업의 일환이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The Yangseo Cooperative(良書協同組合) is a book-based cooperative that began in Busan in the late 1970s and spread and operated nationwide in Masan, Daegu, Gwangju, Seoul, Ulsan, and Suwon, and disappeared around 1980. Yangseo Cooperatives are basically based on the purpose and operation method of general cooperatives, but they are distinguished from general cooperatives in that they accompany the political movement organizations. A cooperative is an organization that uses mutual self-help and economic democracy as its basic ideology and philosophy, and basically aims to improve the economic interests and social situations of its members. The Yangseo Cooperative can be said to have lurked and emerged in the form of a cooperative through good books in the special times of the late 1970s. The Yangseo Cooperative was a social movement organization launched by combining social conditions such as the emergence of critical intellectual groups and the rise of publishing movements, including dismissed journalists, with requests to create a public foundation for the democratization movement. Kim Hyung-ki, who learned about the cooperative's philosophy, operation method, and Canadian Antigonish movement at the Cooperative Education Research Institute established by Sister Gabyl, conceived a new type of social movement organization that combines the cooperative and democratization movement. Since then, the Yangseo Cooperative has spread nationwide in a short period of time, which is evidence that the good books-mediated cooperative movement is an opposing social movement organization that bypasses the system of tyranny. Sharing critical thoughts about reality and assimilating into the idea of liberation by awakening readers through good books would have been a sufficient work to be devised and agreed upon by social transformation forces during the dictatorship period when oppression and surveillance were common. Founded in this direction, the Yangseo Cooperative in each region seems to have been a kind of touchstone that reveals the regional characteristics and athletic capabilities of the time by being organized and operated differently according to their regional characteristics. Although it was operated for a short period of time, the Yangseo Cooperative, which showed the characteristics and athletic capabilities of the community in the late 1970s, has been inherited and converted to community movements of various characteristics since the 1980s. This article examined the background and historical context of the emergence of Yangseo cooperatives, away from the level of retrospective of the parties, and confirmed the tradition of cooperatives that led to books and how they are combined with democratic movements through books. It can be said that the nature and meaning of the social movement history of the good books cooperative are examined in the context of the characteristics of the local Yangseo cooperative and the history of the local movement.
