경주 옥산서원의 설립과 재정 운영

국문 초록

경주 옥산서원은 회재 이언적을 제향하기 위해 건립되었다. 옥산서원은 경주부윤 뿐만 아니라 후손, 문인, 향인들의 적극적인 참여와 협조로 건립되었다. 이들은 건립이후 교육에 필요한 서적을 기부하고, 노비와 토지 등을 이속시켜 서원의 경제적 기반이 형성되는데 기여하였다. 특히 경주부윤 이제민은 토지와 노비, 서적 외에도 서원 인근의 사찰과 수철점, 야철점 등을 서원으로 소속시켜 초창기의 경제적 기반 형성에 큰 도움을 주었다. 그러나 임진왜란을 겪으면서 옥산서원은 대부분의 경제적 기반을 망실하였다. 이후 17세기에는 관의 적극적인 협조를 받아 노비와 토지를 회복하고, 나아가 그 수와 규모를 확장하였다. 하지만 관리가 어려워지면서 노비보다는 토지의 관리에 집중하였는데 경주이외의 지역은 청도를 제외하고 모두 정리하였다. 대신 경주부내 토지를 매입하여 관리의 효율성을 높였다. 아울러 서원 재정의 지출이 증가하면서 원속들의 신공과 그들이 제공하는 현물의 의존도도 높아졌다. 옥산서원은 이들 원속을 통해 부족한 노동력을 확보하고 서원 재정을 보완할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

Gyeongju Oksan Seowon was built to hold ancestral rites for Hoejae Lee Eon-jeok. Oksan Seowon was built with the active participation and cooperation of descendants, writers, and local people as well as Gyeongju wealthy. After its establishment, they contributed to the formation of the economic foundation of Seowon by donating books necessary for education and transferring slaves and land. In particular, Lee Je-min, a rich man in Gyeongju, contributed greatly to the formation of the economic foundation in the early days by belonging to temples, water iron stores, and iron stores near Seowon in addition to land, slaves, and books. However, during the Imjin War, Oksan Seowon lost most of its economic foundation. Later, in the 17th century, slaves and land were restored with the active cooperation of the government, and furthermore, the number and scale were expanded. However, as management became difficult, he focused on land management rather than slaves, and all areas other than Gyeongju were cleared except for Cheongdo. Instead, land within Gyeongju was purchased to increase management efficiency.
