조선~근대 제주 유학 지식인의 형성과 발전에 관한 시론

국문 초록

본고는 조선시대 제주 유학지식인이 본토의 학파와 어떤 관계를 맺었고, 그 양상은 어떠한가를 추적하였다. 문헌기록으로 볼 때 조선시대 제주는 무속이 매우 강한 지역이었다. 이는 제주관련 여러 문헌에서 확인된다. 그렇지만 제주 지식인에 대한 기록은 많지 않다. 조선후기 제주에서도 유학지식인들이 다수 출현하였다. 이들은 당시 유학의 영향으로 성장한 인물이었다. 조선시대 유학이 어떻게 변방으로 확장되었는가 하는 문제는 제주는 물론 조선시대 유학을 이해하는 중요한 키워드라고 할 수 있다. 이런 문제 의식아래 본고에서는 먼저 조선시대의 제주문화와 유학지식인의 형성배경을 확인하고, 무속에서 유교로 전환되는 양상을 점검하였다. 유교사상이 확장함에 따라 제주에서도 유학지식인을 다수 출현하는데, 이들은 본토의 학파와 연결되는 경우도 있고 그렇지 않은 경우도 있었다. 제주와 본토와 연결되는 학파는 퇴계학파, 노사학파, 화서학파, 간재학파가 확인된다. 퇴계학파의 인물로는 張性奎가 있다. 노사학파 인물로는 安達三, 李啓徵을 비롯하여 安秉宅, 金錫翼 등의 인물이 있다. 화사학파는 勉菴 崔益鉉을 배운 金羲正이 있다. 간재학파의 경우는 金景鍾, 高景洙, 高炳五와 같은 인물이 있다. 이들은 일제강점기 때 항일운동에 앞장섰고, 제주 4.3사건 때도 자신들의 의견을 드러내면서, 제주의 중심인물로 활약하였다. 제주에서 이렇게 본토의 학파와 연결되는 인물이 출현하는 것은 남다른 의미가 있다. 이들의 존재는 무속이 강했던 변방 제주에 유교가 뿌리내리고 확장되어가는 모습을 동시에 살필 수 있기 때문이다. 현재 제주에서는 개인 문집 등이 체계적으로 정리되지 않은 상태이다. 본고에서 소개한 사람들 이외에도 문집이 있을 가능성이 적지 않다. 앞으로 자료들이 꾸준히 정리되어 제주 유학지식인에 대해 섬세하게 정리할 수 있기를 기대하는 바이다.

영문 초록

This study examines the patterns of the relationships of confucius scholars of Jeju with those from the mainland during the Chosun period. Ancient literature indicates us that Jeju was the region with very strong shamanism during the Chosun period. This is confirmed in various literature concerning Jeju. However, there are not enough record to cover intellectuals of Jeju. During late Chosun, there appeared numerous confucius intellectuals in Jeju. These figures were formed by the influence of Confucianism in those days. To identify how Confucianism of Chosun was expanded into the border area is the key to understand the Confucianism not only of Jeju but also of Chosun. For this aim, this study examines the background in which the culture of Jeju and confucius intellectuals during the Chosun dynasty era were formed as well as the patters of transformation of the culture of Jeju based upon from shamanism to Confucianism. While confucius ideas spreading, several confucius intellectuals emerged in Jeju as well. Some of them had a network with confucius school in the mainland but some of them did not. it is identified that the schools of Toegyu, Nosa, Hwasea and Kanjae had an exchange with other schools in the mainland. For Nosa school, there are figures such as Ahn Dalsam, Lee Gyejeong, Ahn Byungtak, Kim Sukik. For Hwasea school, there is Kim Heejung who studied Myunam Cho Ikhyun, For Kanjae school, there are Kum Gyungjong, Koh Kyungsu, and Koh Byungoh. During Japanese colonial era, they took the lead in the anti- Japanese movement, and during the Jeju 4.3 incident, they expressed their opinions by acting as central figures of Jeju. It is particularly meaningful that a person connected to the mainland school appears in Jeju. This is because their existence allows us to study how Confucianism took root and expanded in the periphery Jeju where shamanism was strong. Currently, personal collections of writings by Confucius scholars are not systematically organized in Jeju. In addition to the people introduced in this paper, it is highly likely that there is a collection of writings for other confucius scholars in Jeju. It is necessary to organize and arrange such materials step by step for a systematic study.
