정의 지도를 위한 What-If-Not 전략의 활용

국문 초록

정의하기에 관한 연구가 지속적으로 이루어졌지만, 학생들에게는 다소 어려운 활동이며 정의하기를 포함한 교수학적 상황을 설계하는 것 역시 쉽지 않다. 이에 본 연구에서는 정의 지도의 새로운 전략으로 문제제기와 문제해결 맥락에서 논의되던 Brown & Walter(2005)의 What-If-Not 전략을 활용하고자 한다. 본고에서는 이를 위해 정의지도와 What-If-Not 전략에 대한 선행연구를 검토한 뒤 정의에 대한 기능적 이해를 추구하는 ‘정의 탐구 활동’을 고안하였으며 이를 다각형의 외각의 정의를 중심으로 예를 들어 설명하였다. 본 연구의 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학생들은 정의를 변형하는 활동을 통해 좀 더 쉽게 정의에 대해 탐구할 수 있다. 둘째, 정의를 약속한 것이라고만 생각하는 오개념에서 벗어나며 기존의 정의의 의미와 맥락을 성질과 연관하여 더 잘 이해하게 된다. 셋째, 정의에 대한 오개념을 바로 잡을 수 있다.

영문 초록

Although research about defining has been consistently conducted, it is difficult for students and it is not easy to design didactical situations involving defining processes. Thus, in this study, we use What-If-Not strategy of Brown&Walter (2005) which was discussed in the context of posing and solving problems as a new strategy of teaching definitions. In this paper, we examined previous studies on teaching definition and What-If-Not strategy, and devised ‘definition exploration activity’ that pursue functional understanding of definitions and we explained this activity using exterior angle of polygon as an example. The implications of this study are the following. First, students can explore definitions more easily through activities that modify definitions. Second, students can get away from the misconceptions that definitions are just promised and better understand the meaning and context of definitions by linking them with their properties. Third, students can correct misconceptions of the definition.
