영문 초록

The study of Laihe(賴和), Father of Taiwanese New Literature, analyzes the aspects of switching language in his writing. Several studies mainly regard it as the course of identity established by Laihe. According to this opinion, the continuous practice spirit for enlightenment that underlies beneath the text is often overlooked. In the paper, I would like to confirm the aspects of switching language and its meaning from synchronic and diachronic view based on the contemporary character. Diachronically, with the purpose of deep understandment in society, and educating the public, different forms of language are used over time: from Muneonmun to vernacular Chinese to Taiwanese, and back to Muneonmun again. Synchronically, with an open mind and the purpose of enlightenment, Laihe vividly displayed the phases of the times and life of Taiwan by using multiple languages including Muneonmun, Written vernacular Chinese, Taiwanese, and even Japanese.
