조선 19세기 공예품에 나타난 단청 양식 칠보문의 의의

국문 초록

상서롭고 진귀한 가치를 지닌 여러 사물을 소재로 한 칠보문은 조선 후기 공예에서 널리 사용된 문양이다. 칠보문을 구성하는 각 요소는 시문되는 기물의 형태나 사용자의 신분, 장식 기법 등에 따라서 표현에 상당한 차이를 보인다는 특징이 있다. 그런데 19세기 이후 제작된 공예품에서 올록볼록한 외곽선을 가진 띠 장식, 빗금으로 내부가 분할된 보문, 주변 공간을 채우는 둥근 구슬이 공통적으로 장식된 칠보문이 확인된다. 사실 이러한 구성의 칠보문은 조선 후기 왕실 건축물의 단청 장식에 사용하기 위해 디자인된 문양으로, 다수의 공예품에 반복적으로 등장하며 구성과 세부 표현이 균일하게 유지되어 단청 양식 칠보문이라 명명할 수 있다. 본고에서는 19세기 이후 공예품에 단청 양식 칠보문이 시문된 사실을 유물을 통해 밝히면서, 건축과 공예 사이에 문양 교류가 가능했던 배경을 검토했다. 왕실의 영건 사업에서 화원은 단청 문양을 계획하고 그려 넣는 일을 담당했다. 이 과정에서 화원은 단청 작업에 반드시 필요한 화본을 제작했다. 한편, 화원과 화본은 공예품 제작, 특히 문양의 유통에 주요한 역할을 담당한 대상이다. 문양을 직접 그리는 화원을 통해서, 또는 화원이 제작한 화본을 통해서 문양은 확산된다고 추정했으며, 단청 양식 칠보문 또한 화원과 화본이라는 인적, 물적 교류를 통해 건축에서 공예 장식 문양으로 이전될 수 있었다. 화원, 화본을 통해 유통된 단청 양식 칠보문은 19세기 이후 도자, 직물, 목제, 금속 등 공예의 여러 장르에서 활용된다. 19세기 공예품에 나타난 단청 양식 칠보문은 조선 후기 문양의 유통, 복제, 확산에 기여한 화원과 화본의 역할을 다시금 떠올리게 하면서, 기존에 분절적으로 이해되던 건축과 공예를 통합적으로 바라볼 수 있는 단서를 제공한다.

영문 초록

The Chilbo pattern, which is based on several objects with an auspicious, rare, and precious value, was widely used in the craft of the late Joseon Dynasty. The Chilbo pattern is characterized by its expression differing considerably according to the shape of an object, rank of a user, decoration technique, etc. However, the Chilbo pattern, which is commonly decorated with a ribbon of convex outlines, Bomun (a kind of Chilbo pattern) with its inside divided by diagonal lines, and round beads filling its peripheral space, is identified in the craftworks made after the 19th century. The Chilbo pattern of this composition was designed to be used for the Dancheong (traditional decorative coloring) decoration of royal buildings in the late Joseon Dynasty, which appears repeatedly in many objects and may be named the Dancheong-style Chilbo pattern due to its uniform composition and detailed expression. This study explored the background which enabled the exchange of patterns between architecture and craft, revealing through artifacts that the Dancheong-style Chilbo pattern had been used for craftworks after the 19th century. Professional painters were responsible for planning and engraving Dancheong patterns during the construction project of royal buildings. In this process, they made Hwabon (illustrated manual for design) containing patterns essential to the Dancheong work. Meanwhile, professional painters and Hwabon played an important role in making craftworks and especially in distributing patterns. It is presumed that those patterns were spread through professional painters drawing patterns for their own use or through Hwabon made by them. Dancheong-style Chilbo patterns could be also transferred from architecture to craft and decoration through the exchange of human and material resources–professional painters and Hwabon. The Dancheong-style Chilbo pattern has been utilized for several genres of craft including white porcelain, textile, woodwork, metalwork, etc. since the 19th century. The Dancheong-style Chilbo pattern, which appeared in the craftwork of the 19th century, reminds us of the roles of the professional painters and Hwabon who contributed to distributing, copying, and spreading patterns in the late Joseon Dynasty, and provides clues by which one can look at the architecture and craft from an integrated point of view, that was understood segmentally in the past.
