<대동여지도> 판본 형태의 비교 연구

국문 초록

이 연구는 국내ㆍ외 소장된 대동여지도 35개 판본의 형태 차이를 통해 1861년 지도 제작 이후 사회에서지도가 수용되는 모습을 파악하고자 하였다. 판본들의 지리 정보는 기본적으로 동일하나 이를 담고 있는 지도 체제와 정보의 묘사 방법에서 차이를 보이고 있다. 제1첩의 면 배치 체제와 지도의 채색 모습이 다를 뿐만 아니라, 첩을 장정한 표지 형태에서도 차이가 있다. 이와 같은 판본들의 차별적인 모습은 지도가 완성된 형태로 대량 공급된것이 아니라 소량 단위로 보급되었음을 의미한다. 판본 중 전형본은 지도가 완성된 모습을 보여준다. 전형본 중 목판 표제를 사용한 지도는 1880년대 외국의 통상 사절단이나 외교관에 의해 직접 반출된 것임이 확인되었다. 이외의 국외 소장본들은 대부분 일제 강점기때 수집되어 유출되었다. 일부 판본에 필사로 쓰여진 방면 지명은 19세기후반 조선의 사회 상황에서 비롯된 행정구역 개편과 무관하지 않은 것으로 생각된다. 1906년 지방제도 개편을 위한 보고서에 언급된 내용이 이를 뒷받침한다. 대동여지도는 펼치면 전국 336곳의 고을이 서로 관계하는 모습을보여주는 당시의 유일한 지도였다. 고을을 넘나드는 지리정보가 필요한 이들이 지도를 구하여 실용적인 목적으로이용하였음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This study attempted to understand the use of maps in society after 1861 by comparing and analyzing the differences in form in 35 editions of Daedong-yeojido(大東輿地圖), which are owned at home and abroad. The geographic information of the map is standardized, but the physical form surrounding it varies from edition to edition. Not only the order and form of the arrangement of the elements, but also the appearance of the coloring are different. Covers of each concubine has different form under different names. Those diversitis mean that the map was not supplied in a completed form, but was distributed in a very small amount. The typical version of the edition shows the finished forms that the map ultimately aimed for. Among them, some editions with woodblock title on covers were taken out by foreign trade envoys or diplomats in the 1880s. Most of the editions of foreign materials were taken out through the Japanese during the Japanese colonial period. The editions in which the name of the district(坊面) was added as a scribe are also stored abroad. These contents are thought to have nothing to do with the reorganization of administrative districts in Joseon in the late 19th century. The contents in a report in 1906 support this. Daedong-yeojido was the only one at the time when they could see 336 villages across the country connected to each other. Therefore, it shows that those who needed geographic information across the village obtained a map and used it for practical purposes.
