국문 초록

본고는 <호랑이 물리친 여자> 설화의 서사 구조를 살핌으로써, 설화에 나타난 등장인물의 여성 영웅적 성격과 자유주의 페미니즘적 요소를 파악하였다. 이를 통해 성 역할 및 성차별이 엄격했던 전근대사회의 여성들이 이 설화를 향유했던 이유와 가부장적 남성 중심사회에서 이 설화가 상징하는 바를 고찰하였다. 첫째, <호랑이 물리친 여자> 설화에는 여성 영웅적 성격이 잘 드러나 있다. 주인공인 여자는 범인(凡人)은 가지고 있지 않은 용기와 지혜를 통해, 호식 당할 위험에도 굴하지 않고 꾀를 냄으로써 호랑이 퇴치에 성공하고 승리자가 된다. 남성 중심사회에서 여성들은 <호랑이 물리친 여자> 설화와 같이 여성 민중 영웅의 활약이 담긴 설화를 향유하며, 사회를 비판하고 억제된 사회에서 간접적으로나마 화의 분출과 욕구의 해소 등을 통해 통쾌함을 느꼈을 것이다. 둘째, <호랑이 물리친 여자> 설화에는 자유주의 페미니즘이 잘 나타나 있다. 주인공인 여자는 가부장적 남성 중심사회에서의 성 역할을 혁파하고, 호랑이라는 현실의 난관을 개인적 노력·능력으로 극복하는 주체성 있는 존재이다. 호랑이는 남성·남성 중심사회·성차별 등을 표상하며, 주인공 여자는 여성·여성 해방 등을 상징한다. 이로써 여자의 호랑이 퇴치는 남성 중심사회에 대한 여성의 승리·여성 해방으로 해석할 수 있다. 당시 이 설화를 향유하던 여성들은 <호랑이 물리친 여자> 설화의 주인공에, 가부장적 남성 중심사회에서 주체성 없이 사는 자신들을 투영시킴으로써 주체성 있는 삶을 살고 싶은 의지를 표출했을 것이다.

영문 초록

This study identified the female heroic personality and liberal feminism of the characters in the tales by examining the narrative structure of the woman who defeated the tiger tales. Through this, I examined the reason why who women of the premodern society, where gender roles and sexism were strict, enjoyed this tales, and what this tale symbolizes in the patriarchal male-centered society. First, the woman who defeated the tiger tales clearly reveal the female heroic personality. The main character, the woman, succeeds in defeating tiger and becomes a winner by making a trick in spite of giving in to the risk of being eaten by tigers through courage and wisdom that ordinary people don't have. In the male-centered society, women would have criticized the society, enjoying the tales of the performance of female people’s heroes, such as the woman who defeated the tiger tales, and would have felt pleasant through indirect eruption of anger and resolution of desire in a suppressed society. Second, the woman who defeated the tiger tales clearly represent the liberal feminism. The main character, the woman, is an independent being who breaks the gender role in the patriarchal male-centered society and overcomes the reality difficulties of tiger with personal effort and ability. The tiger symbolizes male, male-centered society, sexism, etc., and the main female character symbolizes women and women’s liberation, etc,. Hereby defeating tiger of woman can be interpreted as women’s victory and women's liberation over the male-centered society. At that time, women who were enjoying this tales would have expressed their will to live a independent life by reflecting themselves living without subjectivity in the patriarchal male-centered society into the protagonist of the the woman who defeated the tiger tales.
