국문 초록

이 글에서는 16세기~18세기에 작성된 조선후기 문헌에 기록된 ‘노비’ 관련 자료를 바탕으로, 조선시대 노비의 표기와 명칭의 다양성을 검토하고, 복합적 정체성을 지닌 노비가 일상생활과 일생을 통해 노주와 연결된 사회적 신체성을 형성하면서 경험과 지식, 감각과 정보를 축적한 윤리와 취향, 교양의 주체였음을 논증해, 이를 신분제의 역설로 명명했다. ‘천하고 무지하다’는 수식으로 대표되는 노비 집단이나 개별 정체성은 단일하거나 균질적이지 않았고, 이들이 노주를 위해 노동하면서 익힌 정보, 감각, 경험은 주체로서 성장하는 바탕이 되었으며 기능적, 예술적, 신체적 기량과 감성을 단련하는 계기가 되었다. 노비는 양반(가)와 모종의 사회적/정서적 연결성을 유지하면서 사회적 신체성을 형성했는데, 여종-유모가 양반-아기에게 젖을 먹일 때 이들의 관계는 수유라는 단선적 기능에 제한되지 않고 정서와 교감의 연결성을 형성했으며, 그 관계가 평생 유지되기도 했다. 양반-아기를 돌보던 여종-유모는 정작 친자식을 잃기도 했다. 유모의 젖과 눈물의 향방이야말로 신분제 사회의 모순을 몸으로 겪은 운명에 대한 역설적 상징이다. 양반가의 사노비는 각종 의례에 참여하면서 예절과 윤리를 습득했고, 문해력을 지닌 노비가 일정한 역할을 하기도 했다. 양반을 여행이나 이동을 수행하는 노비는 스스로 경관을 감상하는 주체였고, 향연에서 가무를 하던 풍류비 또한 단순한 노동자가 아니라 예술적 주체였다. 노비의 팔, 다리, 젖은 기계적으로 대체될 수 있는 사물화된 도구가 아니라 양반의 생명, 정서, 일상, 사회적 연결망을 형성하고 유지하는 사회적 신체의 역할을 했고, 이를 통해 노비 자신도 능력과 역량을 키우고 감각적 차원의 성장을 했다.

영문 초록

In this article, based on data related to servants who recorded in the late Joseon literature written in the 16th to 18th centuries, the diversity of notations and names of slaves in the Joseon society is reviewed, and slaves with complex identities are analyzed through daily life. This argued that the servants were the subject of ethics, taste, and culture that accumulated experiences, knowledge, senses and information while forming a social body connected with noble class, and named it the paradox of the class system. The servants groups or individual identities represented by the formula "vulgar and ignorant" were not single or homogeneous, and the information, senses, and experiences they learned while working for their masters became the basis for growing as subjects, and served as an opportunity to train functional, artistic, physical skills and emotions. The servants formed a social body while maintaining a kind of social connection with the noble family. When the maidservant-nanny breastfed the yangban-baby, their relationship was not limited to the one-way function of lactation, but formed a connection between emotions and communication, and the relationship was maintained for life. The maidservant-nanny, who was caring for the yangban-baby, actually lost her biological child, and the fate of the nanny’s milk and tears is a paradoxical symbol of experiencing the contradiction of the social status system. The yangban’s private servants learned manners and ethics by participating in various rituals, and servants with literacy also played a certain role. Servants who traveled or moved for yangban were the subjects of appreciating the scenery themselves, and ‘pungryubi’, who performed songs and dances at the feast, was not just a laborer but an artistic subject. Servants’ arms, legs, and breasts played a role as social bodies that formed and maintained the life, emotion, daily life, and social networks of aristocrats, rather than as objects that could be mechanically replaced, and through this, servants themselves grew in ability, competence, and sensory dimensions.
