‘더 늙은 여성’의 치유

국문 초록

이 글은 ‘교차성(intersectionality)’과 ‘친밀성(intimacy)’이라는 개념을 통해 <덴동어미화전가>에 나타난 ‘더 늙은 여성’이 ‘더 젊은 여성’을 치유하는 힘의 근원과 작동 방식을 밝히는 데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 글로리아 네일러의 소설 『브루스터플레이스의 여자들』과의 비교를 진행하였다. ‘교차성’이란 인종ㆍ계급ㆍ젠더ㆍ섹슈얼리티ㆍ민족ㆍ국가ㆍ능력ㆍ연령이 서로 상호작용하면서 복잡한 사회적 불평등을 형성하는 것을 말한다. 『브루스터플레이스의 여자들』은 교차적 억압에 내몰린 흑인 여성들의 생존기제로서 ‘자매애’와 ‘육체적 친밀성’을 강조하고 있다. <덴동어미화전가>에서는 ‘가부장의 영리 활동’과 ‘부패한 정치’로 말미암은 여성 억압의 교차성이 두드러진다. 비정상적인 정치구조 속에서 덴동어미는 누군가의 희생을 대가로 한 가부장들의 영리 활동에 적극적으로 동참할 수밖에 없었는데, 그것은 결국 자신과 다른 사람들의 삶을 피폐하게 만들었다. 덴동어미는 자신보다 늙은 여성들의 육체적 친밀성을 통해 교차적 억압으로 말미암은 고통을 치유하고, 긴 세월을 살면서 얻은 깨달음을 통해 청춘과부를 치유한다. 나아가 자신보다 젊은 청춘과부와 소낭자가 지닌 자연과의 육체적 친밀성을 통해 자신에 대한 치유도 완성한다. 육체적 친밀성이 인간을 넘어 모든 존재로 확장되는 것은 『브루스터플레이스의 여자들』과는 다른 <덴동어미화전가>의 특징이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine the mechanism of the healing power of ‘older women’ involving ‘younger women’ shown in Dendongeomiwhajeonga through the concept of ‘intersectionality’ and ‘intimacy’: For this, I executed a comparative study between Dendongeomiwhajeonga and The Women of Brewster Place. ‘Intersectionality’ refers to the complicated social inequality made by the interaction among race, class, gender, sexuality, nation, country, ability, and age. The Women of Brewster Place suggests ‘sisterhood’ and ‘physical intimacy’ as the means of survival for the black women who suffered from the intersectional social pressure. Dendongeomiwhajeonga shows the intersectional pressure upon women caused by the for-profit activities of the patriarchies and corrupt politics. In an abnormal political structure, Dendongeomi was forced to comply with the for-profit activities of the patriarchies, which destroyed lives of her own and others. Dendongeomi has been healed from the suffering by this intersectional pressure by the older women’s physical intimacy and heals the young widow’s agony with her wisdom attained through her long life. In addition, she completes the healing of herself through the younger women’s physical intimacy with nature. Dendongeomiwhajeonga differs from The Women of Brewster Place for its extension of physical intimacy between women to all existences.
