국문 초록

본 논문에서는 18세기 후반 함경도 경성(鏡城)에서 발생한 조씨 열녀의 자결 사건과 이를 둘러싼 여러 편의 기록을 분석하였다. 그녀는 예조에 의해 정려를 하사받았고, 이가환·이헌경·성해응·홍경모 등 당대의 내로라하는 문사들에 의해 행적이 기록된 인물이다. 본고에서는 주로 이 네 편의 기록을 근거로 사건의 전말, 기록자의 시각 차이 등을 분석하였다. 조씨 열녀의 자결은 일반적인 열행의 양상과는 사뭇 다른 복잡한 양상과 의미를 보인다. 그녀의 자결 행위가 일반적인 열행으로 보기에는 지나친 감이 있고, 혼인이 이루어지기도 전에 결행했다는 특수성도 있기 때문이다. 그러한 까닭에 조씨 열녀를 기록한 네 편의 글은 미묘하게 다른 관점과 기록 태도를 보인다. 아울러 조씨 열녀와 관련하여 확인되는 여러 기록들은, 문자로 남은 기록이라 하더라도 모두 다 신뢰할 수는 없다는 사실을 잘 보여주기도 한다. 관(官)에 의해 기록된 공식 기록이라고 해도 이는 마찬가지이다. 기록과 기록이 충돌하거나, 기록만으로는 해결되지 않는 문제, 기록만으로는 진실을 알 수 없는 부분이 상존하기 때문이다. 본고에서는 이렇듯 같은 인물을 대상으로 다른 기록이 남아 있는 이유, 그리고 여러 편의 기록이 시사하는 지점에 대해서도 함께 살펴보았다. 이와 관련하여 기록자가 주목하는 지점에 따라 사건을 바라보는 시선이 달라질 수 있으며, 창작 의도에 따라 문체를 달리 선택할 수 있음을 검토하였다. 이는 이야기가 전파되고 기록되는 양상과도 깊은 관계가 있다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes the suicide of Lady Jo, a righteous woman, which occurred in Gyeongseong, Hamgyeong Province, during the late Joseon period, and the various records surrounding this event. She was posthumously honored by the Ministry of Rites and her deeds were documented by prominent literary figures of the time, including Lee Ga-hwan, Lee Heon-gyeong, Seong Hae-eung, and Hong Gyeong-mo. This study primarily examines these four records to analyze the details of the incident and the differences in the perspectives of the recorders. Lady Jo's suicide presents a complex and unique case that differs significantly from typical examples of righteous deeds. Her act of taking her own life, which occurred even before her marriage was finalized, suggests an exceptional circumstance that goes beyond the usual expectations of female fidelity and virtue. Consequently, the four records documenting Lady Jo’s actions reveal subtle differences in perspectives and attitudes towards her story. Furthermore, the various records related to Lady Jo illustrate that not all written accounts can be trusted at face value. This applies even to official records maintained by governmental authorities. Conflicts between records, unresolved issues through documentation alone, and unknown truths all persist. This paper also explores why different records about the same person exist and what these multiple accounts imply. It considers how the focus of the recorder can influence the perception of the event, how the choice of literary style can vary according to the writer's intention, and how stories are transmitted and recorded.
