다윈주의 이론의 역사연구 적용에 대한 시론

국문 초록

최근 인문사회과학의 각 분과에서는 현대 다윈주의 이론을 적용한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 그러나 역사학계의 경우 다윈주의 이론과의 결합은 아직 초보적인 단계에 머물러 있다. 역사학이 다윈주의 이론을 분석의 도구로 사용하려면 우선 기존의 연구사례와 접근방식을 검토함으로써 연구에 끼어들 수 있는 위험요소를 사전에 제거할 필요가 있다. 이를 위해 이 글에서는 경제사학자 그레고리 클라크와 과학사학자 프랭크 설로웨이가 수행한 연구를 살펴보았다. 클라크의 경우 ‘자연선택’이라는 다윈주의 이론의 고전적 원리를 통해서, 설로웨이는 ‘출생순서’라는 현대 진화생물학 이론을 통해 역사에 대한 새로운 통찰을 시도한 바 있다. 동시에 클라크와 설로웨이의 연구는 다윈주의와 역사연구의 결합이 가질 수 있는 문제점 또한 적지 않게 노출했다. 이들의 연구에서 나타나는 결함은 향후 역사학 연구에서 다윈주의 이론을 어떤 식으로 적용할 것인가에 대한 지침을 제시해주고 있다.

영문 초록

Research with an application of evolutionary theory is under active progress these days in various disciplines of humanities and social sciences. However, in the circle of historical studies, combination with the Darwinism is still at a fledgling stage. For the study of history to effectively make use of the Darwinism and evolutionary theory, it is necessary to remove risk factors that can get in the way of research in advance by reviewing the existing studies and research approaches. For this purpose, this paper examined studies by economic historian Gregory Clark and science historian Frank J. Sulloway. Clark and Sulloway proposed new approaches to contemplate on the history through natural selection, a conventional principle of evolutionary theory, and modern evolutionary biology theory named birth order theory, respectively. At the same time, their studies exposed a number of potential problems that can occur when combining the Darwinism and historical studies. The flaws found out in their studies provide guideline for applying the Darwinian Theory in future historical studies.
