하워드 코틀러(Howard Kottler) 작품에 나타난 정치적 사회적 표현에 대한 연구(1966~1972)

국문 초록

본 연구는 산업 도자 기술을 수용하여 표현주의적 도자예술을 시도한 하워드 코틀러(Howard Kottler, 1930~1989) 작품의 ‘정치적’,‘사회적’표현을 확인하고 그 내용을 분류 분석하는데 목적을 두고 있 다. 논거의 확보를 위해 1995년 간행된 『Howard Kottler: Face to Face』를 기반으로 1960년대 말부터 1970년대 초까지 제작된 정치·사회적 성향의 작품을 조사하였다. 아울러 당대의 미국 사회와 미술계 담론을 살펴본 후 작품에 공통으로 드러나는 특징을 표현기법과 내용을 기준으로 분류하고 분석하였 다. 1960년대 미국은 베트남 전쟁으로 야기된 사회적 혼란이 가중되며 정신적 자유를 추구하는 분위기 가 형성되었는데, 코틀러는 이러한 현상이 작품에 영향을 미쳤다고 피력하였다. 이와 같은 제작 동기 와 내용을 바탕으로 1966년부터 1970년대까지 약 60여점의 전사 접시 시리즈를 제작하였으며 본 고에 서는 논지를 담보할 수 있는 대표작 15점으로 압축하여 분석하였다. 당시 미술계 역시 매체의 다양성을 추구하는 여러 시도가 있었는데, 이 시기 전사지와 대량설비 사 용에 영향을 받았던 접시 시리즈의 공통적 특성을 분류하면 다음과 같다. 우선 산업기술을 수용하여 기계로 양산한 도자기를 사용했고, 포토몽타주 기법을 사용하여 실제 사건에 대한 비판적 시각을 표현 하였다. 또한 언어적 아이러니와 희화화된 이미지를 통해 당대 이슈화된 정치세력을 비판하거나 금기 시되었던 동성애를 다룬 작품을 제작하였다. 새로운 시도에 보수적인 도예계의 변화를 위해 적극적이었던 코틀러는 실용적 사물을 비기능적으로 전용한 작가이다. 또한 시대의 흐름과 사회적 이슈에 예민하게 반응하고 이를 작품을 통해 해석하며 도예의 예술적 역할을 향상시켰다. 코틀러의 이러한 시도는 매체의 한계를 넘어 발전하고 있는 현대 미술 속에서 도예의 방향을 제시하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study focuses on identifying and clarifying Howard Kottler(1930~1989) s ‘political and social’ expression for the expressionistic ceramic arts by accepting industrial ceramic technology. Issues of contemporary politics, society, religion, and art community appear in the Howard Kottler s works about the periodical situation. In the 1960s, it created an atmosphere of seeking mental freedom in the U.S., increasing social turmoil caused by the Vietnam War, which it said as periodical situation influenced the works. Based on such motivation and contents of production, Howard Kottler produced a series of about 60 decal plates from 1966 to the 1980s. In those days, the art community also had several attempts to pursue the diversity of media, and the common features of the plate series, which were influenced by the use of decals and mass facility system, are as follows. For a start, it adopted industrial technology and used machine-produced ceramic, which allowed the plate to be interpreted as an Objet. Critical perspective of real events was expressed by using Photomontage technique as one of surrealism techniques. Lastly, satirical works were produced through verbal irony and caricatured image. Howard Kottler, who was active in changing the ceramic art world, which was conservative in new attempts and changes, is an artist who converted practical object into non-functional one. In addition, he reacted sensitively to the stream of times and social issues, interpreted them through works, and improved the artistic role of ceramic art. The significance of the study can be found in that Howard Kottler s such attempts suggested the direction of ceramic art in modern art that is developing beyond the limits of the media.
