연기지역 백제 유민의 불상 조성

국문 초록

연기지역에서 만들어진 불상들에 대해서는 명문이나 도상을 중심으로 계속해서 분석되고 있다. 필자 역시 신라에 의하여 추진된 백제유민에 대한 지배정책과 관련해서, 또한 여러 불상들을만든 백제유민의 성격에 대해서 언급한 바가 있다. 이 글에서는 이전에 간단히 다루었던 연기지역 백제유민의 불교신앙과 관련된 내용을 중심으로 새롭게 검토해보고자 한다. 현재 불교신앙에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있기는 하지만, 그 내용들을 보다 자세히 유기적으로 다루어볼 필요가 남아 있기 때문이다. 아미타신앙만이 아니라 미륵신앙이나 석가불신앙 등 다른 불교신앙의 모습에 대해서도 새로운 관심을 가져야 한다는 점에서이다. 이를 통해서 백제 의자왕대 정치적으로 전성기를 구가하다가 멸망한 백제의 불교 수준이 얼마나 높았던가를 엿볼 수 있을 것이다. 앞으로 이러한 백제 불교가 신라불교와 어떻게 연결되었는가에 대한 사상사적 관심을 더욱 본격적으로 기울여야 할 것이다. 한편 백제유민이 전해주는 여러 불교신앙은 신라에 복속된 백제유민을 둘러싸고 매우 복잡한상황이 전개되고 있음을 알려주고 있다. 따라서 이러안 불상조성이 전해주는 내용들을 통해서신라 사회에서 자신의 삶을 새롭게 살아간 백제유민의 고뇌를 함께 읽어보아야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The Buddhist statues made in the Yeongi area are being analyzed continuously, focusing on inscriptions and styles. The author has mentioned before about the characteristics of Baekje refugees whom made various Buddhist statues and also about the ruling policy regarding those refugees which was carried out by Silla. The purpose of present article is to newly examine the content related to the Buddhist beliefs of Baekje refugees in the Yeongi area, which has been dealt briefly. Although there is increasing interest about the Buddhist beliefs at present, there still require a necessity to organically examine the related contents. This is because new attention should be paid not only to Amita faith, but also to other Buddhist beliefs such as Maitreya faith and Sakyamuni Buddha faith. Through this, it would be possible to get a glimpse of how advanced the level of Buddhism was during the reign of King Uija when Baekje was at its political golden age and later on collapsed. In the future, more attention should be paid in demonstrating how Buddhism of Silla was connected to Buddhism of Baekje. On the other hand, the various Buddhist beliefs displayed by Baekje refugees indicate that there have been complexities regarding the situations of those who were subordinated to Silla. Therefore, it can be said that the construction of Buddhist statues conveys the agony of Baekje refugees whom had to newly start their lives in the Silla society.
