일재(逸齋) 신한평(申漢枰)의 생애와 회화 연구

국문 초록

일재(逸齋) 신한평(申漢枰, 1726?~1809 이후)은 영ㆍ정ㆍ순조대에 도화서 화원이자 규장각초대 자비대령화원이다. 신윤복의 아버지로 더 잘 알려져 있지만, 그는 무려 36년 이상을 화원으로 봉직하며 국가의 주요한 화업에 참여하였고, 최고의 화원들만 차출되던 어진화사(御眞畵師)에세 차례나 선발될 만큼 당대 유명한 화원이었다. 또한 그는 인물, 풍속, 화조, 산수 등 다양한 장르에서 상당한 실력을 갖춘 역량 있는 화가이기도 하였다. 이 점에 주목하여, 이 글은 그의 생애와작품세계를 고찰하면서 한국회화사에 끼친 그의 영향력을 재평가해보고자 하였다. 신한평은 중인 집안 출신으로 언제 도화서에 입문하였는지 알 수 없지만, 숙부이자 도화서 화원인 신덕흡의 영향으로 화원이 된 듯하다. 1784년(정조 8) 『영조육존호장조재존호도감의궤』를비롯하여 10개의 의궤에서 그의 이름이 등장하고, 8차례의 포폄등제(褒貶等第) 기록, 25차례의녹취재 도계획방(祿取才 都計劃榜) 성적 등은 그가 얼마나 충실하게 화원직을 수행했는지를 보여준다. 또한 전래작들이 인물, 영모ㆍ화조, 풍속 등 여러 장르에 포진해 있고, 상반된 성격인 원체화풍과 사의화풍을 동시에 구사하는 등 다양한 화풍과 기법을 보여주기도 한다. 그는 오랜 활동 기간만큼이나 무수한 그림을 그렸을 것이고 이를 토대로 다양한 장르와 기법에 두루 능숙했을 것으로추측된다. 특히 세 차례의 어진화사 선발, 포폄등제 기록과 김광국의 화제 등은 신한평이 당대 초상화에특화된 화원이었음을 말해주는데, 이는 섬세하고 치밀한 공필과 설채법을 기반으로 한 사실적인묘사가 돋보이는 <이광사초상>을 통해서도 확인할 수 있다. 이같은 신한평의 화풍은 후배화가에게 소재와 기법 면에서 영감을 주기도 하였고, 특히 섬세한 필선과 화려한 색채표현을 특징으로하는 신윤복의 화풍을 형성하는데 영향을 주기도 하였다.

영문 초록

Il-Jae Sin Han-pyung may be better known as Sin Yun-bok’s father, but he was also a skilled painter whose great talent was demonstrated in paintings of figures, genre, flowers and birds, and landscape. He served as a painter of Dohwaseo and Gyujanggak for more than 36 years, and was so well known that he served as a royal painter three times, which only the best painters of the time could serve as. Paying attention to such, this article is intended to examine his life and world of work, and re-evaluate his place in the history of Korean painting. Born to a common-class family, it is speculated that Sin Han-pyung became a painter under the influence of his uncle, Shin Deok-hup, a painter of Dohwaseo. It is unknown when he entered Dohwaseo, but the evidence that Sin Han-pyung was a faithful painter is abundant with a total of 10 times his name appearing in Eugye, eight records in the Merit Rating System of Joseon Dynasty, and 25 records as a Jabidaeryungwhawon hwawon (the best painters of their time, temporarily recruited for royal court assignments in the late Joseon period). Also, with his longevity as a painter and thus probably countless pictures, he was proficient in various genres and techniques. This is supported by the fact that his works that can be seen now are various in terms of genre, such as figures, furry animals, flowers and birds, genre, and landscapes, as well as various styles and techniques, such as color paintings of flowers and birds in academic style and ink-and-wash paintings of flowers and birds in literary artistic style. Sin Han-pyung was especially specialized in portraits, evidenced by serving as a royal painter three times, records in the Merit Rating System of Joseon Dynasty, and Kim Gwang-guk’s title of painting. He was excellently skilled in realistic depictions based on finely-drawn paintings and coloring, which suited his role as a royal painter. This is noteworthy in that it became a factor in forming the painting style of his son Sin Yun-bok, who is characterized by his delicate brush strokes and colorful expression.
