근대 일본에서 발행된 조선지도 속의 녹둔도

국문 초록

이 논문은 근대 일본에서 발행된 조선지도에 수록된 녹둔도의 지형과 한인마을 지명을 분석한것이다. 메이지유신~청일전쟁기 발행된 조선지도 중에 녹둔도는 海島ㆍ河口島ㆍ三角洲 또는 連陸化된형태로 나타난다. 이런 양상은 이미 조선후기 지도에 시차를 두고 나타났던 것이다. 그러나 일본에서는 직접 조사한 정보의 부족으로 재래의 조선지도를 복제하거나 외국지도를 참고하여 재편집한 형태로 지도가 발행되었다. 따라서 편집자가 저본으로 삼은 조선지도에 따라 다양한 형태로표현된 녹둔도가 비슷한 시기에 착종되어 나타나게 되었다. 일본 참모본부는 청일전쟁 이후 臨時測圖部를 설치하여 1895년부터 한반도에 대한 1/50,000 지도를 제작하기 시작했고 1906~8년에는 1/20,000 <羅津要塞近傍圖>를 제작하였다. 이어서1926년에 두만강하구의 함경북도 일대에 대해 중요한 지리정보를 삭제한 채 <조선교통도>라는 이름으로 발행하였으나 이 역시 녹둔도 중북부지역에 대한 정보가 누락되었다. 이후 참모본부에서는 1938년 만주와 시베리아 진출을 위해 <滿洲十萬分一圖>를 제작하면서 녹둔도에 대한 온전한 지리정보를 확보하게 되었다. 이들 지도에는 근대 이후 녹둔도에 정착한 한인마을의 지명이 표기되어 있다. 1860년 베이징조약으로 러시아로 편입된 녹둔도는 행정구역상 포드고르나야(Podgornaia)와 크라스노예 셀로(Krasnoe Selo)[鹿坪]로 구분되었다. 지명 중 城基[성터]ㆍ城場[장터]는 녹둔도에 성터가 있었다는 역사적 경험이 지명으로 정착된 것이었다. 충무공 이순신의 녹둔도전투가 벌어졌던 農堡는바로 성기[성장]에 있었다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article aims to clarify the topography and the place names of Korean villages in Nokdun Island on the maps of Joseon published in modern Japan. Nokdun Island appears as either an island in the sea or at the river estuary or as a connected part of a river delta. The maps of the late Joseon Dynasty followed these identifications of Nokdun Island after a while. Due to the lack of geographical information from direct surveys, maps of Joseon were published in Japan by copying or re-editing existing Joseon or foreign maps. Therefore, different forms of Nokdun Island were mixed in Japan’s Joseon maps according to the different original Joseon maps used by map editors. The Imperial Japanese Army General Staff Office established the Temporary Department of Survey and Mapping (Rinji sokuto bu 臨時測図部), producing a map of the Korean Peninsula on a scale of 1/50,000 in 1895 and the Map of the Vicinity of the Rajin Fortress (Rajin yosai kinbō to 羅 津要塞近傍図) on a scale of 1/20,000 from 1896 to 1898. In 1926, the department published the Joseon Transportation Map (Chōsen kyōkō to 朝鮮交通図), but as the map editors deliberately omitted important geographical information at the mouth of the Duman(Tumen) River in North Hamgyeong Province, information on the central and northern regions of Nokdundo Island was still missing on the map. It was in 1938 that Japan secured complete geographic information on Nokdun Island when the General Staff Office produced the Map of Manchuria on a Scale of 100 Thousandth (Manshū jūman bun ichi to 満洲十万分一図) to advance to Manchuria and Siberia. These maps marked the names of villages of Koreans who settled on Nokdun Island since the modern era. The island, incorporated into Russia by the Treaty of Beijing in 1860, consisted of Podgornaya(Подгорная) and Krasnoe Selo (Красное Cело, Nokpyeong in Korean) in administrative districts. The place names such as “城基”(Senki, Shōki, Seonggi, Seongteo) and “城場”(Chanto, Shōchō, Seongjang, Jangteo) suggest the historical fact that there were fortress sites on the island. These place names presumed to refer to the same place as Nongbo 農堡 where Chungmugong Yi Sun-shin’s Battle of Nokdun Island took place.
