국문 초록

무의공 이순신은 임진년(1592) 초에 방답 첨사로 부임한 이후, 실력과 성실함으로 충무공 이순신의 인정을 받기 시작했다. 그리고 같은 해에 있었던 4차례 출전에 모두 참여해서 큰 전공을 세웠다. 제1차 출전 때는 참모장 격인 중위장(中衛將)을 맡아 서전을 승리로 장식하는데, 큰 공을 세웠다. 제2차 출전부터 제4차 출전 때까지 모든 해전에서 선봉에 섰고, 계속해서 전공을 세웠다. 요컨대 무의공은 첫해의 모든 해전에서 누구보다도 큰 전공을 거듭 세웠다. 이 점은 이후 이순신만 포상에서 제외되자, 충무공 이순신이 이의를 제기하며 추가로 포상을 요청한 사실을 통해서도 확인할 수 있다. 계사년(1593)과 갑오년(1594)에는 측근으로서 충무공 이순신을 보좌했다. 특히 광양 현감 어영담(魚泳潭) 사후에는 권준(權俊)과 더불어 일상적으로 만나 함께 활을 쏘고, 술을 마시고, 군사를 논의하였다. 그 결과 무의공 이순신은 갑오년 4월 18일에 부하 장수 중에 가장 먼저 수군절도사(충청 수사)로 승진하였다. 정유년(1597) 4월 1일, 충무공 이순신이 한성 옥(獄)에서 풀려나는 당일에 술을 가지고 가서 만나고 함께 이야기할 정도로 가까운 사이였다. 명량해전 이후, 12월 1일부터는 경상수사가 되어 통제사 이순신을 다시 보좌하게 되었다. 마지막 노량해전에서 통제사 이순신이 전사하는 날까지 측근 장수로서 여러 방면에서 이순신을 보좌하였다. 요컨대 무의공 이순신은 충무공 이순신의 핵심 참모로서 임진왜란 시작과 끝을 함께 한 장수였다. 순천 부사 권준, 광양현감 어영담, 흥양 현감 배흥립, 녹도 만호 정운 등과 함께 충무공 이순신이 국가적인 영웅이 될 수 있도록 보좌한 훌륭한 동료이자 부하 장수였다.

영문 초록

Muuigong Yi Sun-sin took office as the associate commander of Bangdap in early 1592, after which he began to be recognized by Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin for his competence and diligence. Muuigong participated in all 4 battle campaigns that took place in the same year, and made huge contribution to victories. In the 1st campaign, Muuigong decorated his first battle with a ceremonial victory as the central commandant, a position equivalent to chief of staff. From the 2nd until the 4th campaign, he participated as the vanguard in every naval battle, and continued achieving huge success. In short, in every single naval battle during the first year, Muuigong repeatedly established huge military merit incomparable to that of anyone else. This can be confirmed by the fact that Chungmugong requested for an extra reward in appreciation of Muuigong, when he was excluded from reward. In 1593 and 1594, Muuigong assisted Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin as a close, trusted officer. Following the death of magistrate of Gwangyang, Eo-Yeongdam, Muuigong casually met with Kwon-Jun to shoot arrows, share drinks, and discuss military affairs. As a result, on April 18th of 1594 Muuigong was the first among the subordinate officers to be promoted to the rank of naval force commander (as ‘naval commander of Chung-Cheong Province’). On April 1st of 1597, when Chungmugong was discharged from Hansung prison, Muuigong was close enough of person to await him outside the gates to greet him and share drinks. From December 1st, following the Battle of Myeongnyang, Muuigong became the naval commander of Gyeong-Sang Province, and was once again present to assist the chief of navy, Chungmugong. Until the death of Chungmugong at the Battle of Noryang, Muuigong assisted him in numerous ways as a close officer within his inner circle. In Summary, Muuigong Yi Sun-sin is a core staff officer of Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin, who lived through the beginning until the end of ‘Japanese Invasion of Korea 1592-1598.’ Along with Governor of Suncheon Kwon-Jun, magistrate of Gwangyang Eo-Yeongdam, magistrate of Heungyang Bae-Heunglip, commander of Nokdo Jeong-Un, Muuigong served as an outstanding subordinate officer as well as a comrade assisting Chungmugong in becoming a national hero.
