떼이야르 드 샤르댕의 사상에 나타난 창조와 진화의 통합적 전망

국문 초록

떼이야르 드 샤르댕은 과학적 탐구와 그리스도교 신앙의 통합적 접근을 통해 진화의 개념을 창조의 개념과 결합하는 것이 가능하다는 것을 보여 주었다. 과학자로서 그는 우주가 진화하는 과정과 우주 속에서의 인간의 위치를 탐구하였고, 신학자로서 그는 이 세계의 외적 내적 측면을 함께 바라보고 진화하는 우주 속에서 하느님 이해를 확장하였다. 그는 과학에 기반을 두고 인간과 우주의 기원에 대한 신학적인 성찰을 함으로써 하느님과 우주 그리고 인간의 상호 연관성을 강조하는 유기적인 세계관의 토대를 마련해 주었다. 떼이야르의 견해에 따르면, 진화는 물질에서 생명, 생명에서 정신이 발생하는 역동적인 과정이다. 복잡성의 증대와 의식의 상승을 동반하는 우주진화는 마지막 수렴점, 곧 오메가 포인트(그리스도)를 향해 나아간다. 하느님은 이러한 우주의 진화를 있게 한 궁극적인 동력이다. 즉 하느님은 세상 위, 진화 과정의 바깥에 홀로 머무시는 분이라기보다 우주 진화의 전체 과정에 내재하며 그 방향을 최종 완성을 향해 이끌어 가는 우주의 완성자라는 것이다. 이런 점에서 볼 때 우주 진화 전체는 신의 영역 속에 있고, 그 진화는 결국 하느님의 창조 과정이다. 이처럼 떼이야르는 창발하는 우주의 외적이고 내적인 면을 종합함으로써 우리가 좀 더 넓은 지평에서 우주-인간-하느님의 관계에 대한 안목을 갖게 하고, 진화와 창조가 양립할 수 있음을 보여주었다. 창조와 진화에 관한 떼이야르의 통합적 관점은 당대에는 환영받지 못했지만, 오늘날에는 우리에게 조화로운 세계관을 제시하고 새로운 종합의 가능성을 열어주고 있다. 과학과 종교를 통합적으로 접근하며 얻은 그의 통찰력은 세상을 이원적으로 분리해서 대립적으로 보거나 어느 쪽이 옳은지 판단하는데 머무르기보다는 전체적인 측면에서 이해하도록 우리를 초대한다. ‘양자택일’이 아닌 ‘양자채택’ 접근법이 필요하다는 것이다. 새로운 종합을 위한 그의 노력이 말해주듯이, 우주의 기원에 관한 과학적 설명과 신학적 설명은 모두 필요하다. 하나의 영역 그 자체로는 불완전하고, 이 둘은 상호 보완적이어야 한다. 과학과 신앙이 대화 속에서 서로 경청할 때 우리는 어느 한 영역에서는 얻을 수 없는 진리를 양쪽 영역에서 배우게 되고, 광활한 우주를 총체적으로 이해할 수 있게 된다.

영문 초록

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin devoted his life to bridging Christian faith and science. He made a significant contribution at the interface God’s creation and evolution of the universe. As a scientist, he explored the emerging process of the universe and humanity’s place in the unfolding sweep of evolution. As a theologian, he integrated the spiritual and physical dimensions of the universe and expanded the understanding of the Divine in the grandeur of the evolving universe. Through this scientific and theological reflections on origins of the universe and human beings, Teilhard contributed to form an organic worldview which highlights interrelatedness among God, the universe and humanity. According to Teilhard, evolution is a dynamic process in which matter gradually evolves toward life and then toward spirit through increasing union. The cosmogenesis which evolves into greater complexity and consciousness is moving toward an ultimate goal, which he terms “Omega Point.” In this evolutionary process, God pervades the whole of reality and enables its evolutionary process. That is, God exists the whole process of evolving universe and leads the cosmogenesis towards to a point of perfection. From this perspective cosmic evolution is in the divine milieu, and evolution is God’s ongoing creation. By synthesizing the inner and outer aspects of cosmogenesis, Teilhard encourages us to see the whole phenomenon, in which the Divine, the universe, and human beings are deeply integrated. His holistic view of cosmogenesis overcomes a dualistic approach that divides evolution and creation. Teilhard’s integrated vision of creation and evolution, which was once criticized, now opens us to a balanced worldview and a new synthesis. Embodying the wisdom within both science and religion, his holistic insight invites us to live in the expansive reality of ‘both-and’ rather than in a constrictive dualistic reality of ‘either-or.’ As his endeavor for a new synthesis implies, the scientific explanation of origins and the theological explanation of origins complement one another. Each in itself is incomplete; each provides something the other lacks. Only by joining them do we get a complete and satisfactory explanation of the origins of the universe.
