朝鮮後期 刀劒文學의 悲壯美에 대한 考察

국문 초록

古來로부터 刀劒은 강인한 힘 그 자체를 상징해왔다. 동서고금을 막론하고 사나이라면 본능적으로 희구하는 강함에 대한 意想을 가장 응축적으로 담고 있는 무기가 바로 도검인 것이다. 조선의 사대부는 이러한 도검에 대한 미학적 감수성을 문학적 형상화의 과정을 통해 재구성하여, 도검을 중요 소재 및 제재로 하는 ‘刀劒 文學’을 창출하였다. 도검 문학을 창작한 조선시대 사대부에게 있어서 도검은 과연 어떠한 의미를 지닌 기물이었는가? 사대부에 의해 창작된 도검 문학에서 도검은 일차적으로 人命殺傷用 冷兵器로서의 본원적 성격을 지니고 있으며, 문학적 형상화의 과정을 통해 정의를 추구하는 사대부의 정신을 상징하는 義劒으로서 그 존재감을 강하게 드러내기도 하고, 心身修養의 器物인 修養劒·惡獸와 妖鬼를 물리치는 辟邪의 神物인 神劒으로서의 면모를 보이기도 한다. 이처럼 다양한 문학적 형상을 지닌 도검은 사대부 자신의 剛直한 義氣를 투영하는 대상물로 도검 문학 속에서 존재한다. 그런데 이러한 도검 문학 속의 도검은, 때때로 작품의 悲壯美를 부각시키는 장치로서 기능하기도 한다. 敵을 擊滅할 수 있는 강력한 힘을 지닌 도검은, 도검문학의 주인공이 처한 비극적 상황을 타개할 수 없을 때 劒匣 속에서 悲痛함을 표현하는 龍吟을 토해낸다. 그리고 좌절한 주인공이 부질없이 칼을 쓰다듬는 撫劒의 모습에서도 비통함의 情調가 드러난다. 도검문학 속에서 드러나는 이와 같은 비통함은 도검문학의 비장미를 간접적으로 노출시킨다. 비통함이 담긴 비장미가 때로는 도검문학 작품 속의 도검 형상을 통해 직접적으로 드러나기도 한다. 도검을 휘두르고 화살을 날리며 적과 맹렬히 싸우던 영웅적 사대부가 刀折矢盡의 상황에 맞닥뜨리게 되어 戰場에서 壯烈히 戰死하는 순간, 부러지거나 팽개쳐진 도검은 곧 사대부 자신의 좌절 그 자체를 의미한다. 강직한 義氣가 賊의 凶劒으로 인해 꺾여버린 것이다. 그러나 이는 죽임을 당하는 순간의 좌절일 뿐 그 의기가 결코 스러지지는 않았음을 독자가 알기에, 그에 대한 안타까운 감정이 극대화되면서 비통함을 공감하게 되고 이를 통해 작품의 비장미를 더더욱 느끼게 된다. 이러한 비장미는 검무시 속에서도 발견된다. 부친의 원수를 갚기 위해 검무로 백제왕을 암살한 후 도륙당한 黃昌郞을 다룬 황창랑 검무시는, 소년 영웅이었던 황창랑의 기개를 중국의 협객과 비교하여 칭송하면서 동시에 아들을 잃은 황창랑 모친의 痛恨도 아울러 그려내고 있다. 본고에서는 상기 내용을 바탕으로, 17~18세기 조선의 도검문학에서 나타나는 비장미의 문학적 형상화에 주목하였다. 도검 문학 속의 비장미가 지닌 미학적 면모를 조명하는 본고의 작업은 조선조 도검 문학의 미학적 실체를 정립하는 연구의 출발점이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

Since ancient times, the sword has been a representation of strong power. Across the ages and in all countries of the world, swords have communicated the image of strength and power, the ideals that a brave man desires instinctually. SaDaeBu(士大夫), The ruling aristocracy of the Joseon Dynasty, reconstructed the aesthetic sensibility of the sword by the process of literary imagery to make a ‘sword literature(刀劒文學).’There are three major images involving the sword in korean literature: ShinGeom(Amulet Sword for averting evil), UiGeom(Sword of justice), and SuyangGeom(Sword that improves spiritual culture). These sword images, which reflect the upright and chivalrous spirit of SaDaeBu, sometimes highlight the tragic beauty of sword literature. In examining this literature, We see a powerful sword that can destroy evil enemies, but lacks the ability to overcome the tragic situation of the sword literature s hero, is seen to roar like a dragon(龍吟) to express bitterness from within its case. We see a scene, where a discouraged hero is stroking the sword(撫劒), which is a symbol of the hero s tragic situation, and shows the feeling of pathos. This kind of feeling about pathos in korean sword literature, exposes tragic beauty indirectly. Sometimes tragic beauty, including pathos, is exposed directly in the shape of a sword within the sword literature. The heroic SaDaeBu, who brandished a sword and shot arrows against his enemies untill all of his arrows were spent, dies in a battlefield grasping a broken sword. A broken sword represents the frustration of the heroic SaDaeBu. But, the frustration was only at the time of his death, his spirit never fades away. Tragic beauty is also found in Geommu Poetry(劒舞詩). Most of all, the HwangChangnang Geommu Poem(黃昌郞劒舞詩) generally extols Hwang- Changnang s courage(it is often compared with that of Chinese Heros) and his sword dance skill(he was the famous boy assassin in Silla Dinasty period, who repeatedly stabbed his victim, after he assassinated the king of Baek Je). The HwangChangnang Geommu Poem also described HwangChangnang s mother s sadness at the death her child. In 17th and 18th century Korean literature, the sword is represented in a variety of symbolic images. This paper is especially focused on the sword imagery that convey tragic beauty. It would be a departure point of study to establish the aesthetic form of a sword literature.
