미국 해군 장교 버나두가 수집한 조선 지도와 그의 조선 인식

국문 초록

이 논문에서는 미국 해군 장교 버나두가 1884년에서 1885년 사이에 조선을 방문하여 수집한 11매의 지도 중 ｢해동전도」와 도별 지도 8매의 서지 사항 및 지도상에 기재된 내용을 분석하였다. 아울러 이 9매의 지도에 대한 설명을 포함하고 있는 내셔널 지오그래픽 잡지 내 버나두의 글을 분석하여 그가 수집한 조선의 지도 및 그의 조선 지리에 대한 인식을 파악하였다. 분석 결과 이 지도는 프랑스 선교사 블랑 주교가 소장하고 있던 지도를 모사한 지도이며, 정상기의 ｢동국지도」 원본 계열 지도임을 파악하였다. 특히 이 지도는 현재까지 파악된 정상기의 ｢동국지도」 계열 지도 가운데 한자 지명과 한글 지명이 병기된 유일한 지도라는 점이 확인되었다. 나아가 내셔널 지오그래픽 내 버나두의 글에서 지도에 한자 지명과 한글 지명을 병기한 이유가 조선의 지명을 정확하게 파악하기 위한 것이라는 점이 밝혀졌다. 아울러 버나두는 조선의 지도가 제작수준이 상당히 높았음을 김정호의 ｢대동여지도」 및 정상기의 ｢동국지도」 원본 계열 지도를 통해 인지하고 있었음이 파악되었다. 그리고 내셔널 지오그래픽 잡지에 실린 버나두의 글은 비교적 객관적인 시각으로 조선을 묘사하고 있었고, 향후 조선을 탐사할 미국인들을 위해 상세한 현장의 정보를 제공하고 있었다. 동시에 미국인들이 조선에 대해 가장 궁금하게 여겼던 정보인 금광 정보를 설명하고, 지도로 까지 표현하고 있었음이 확인되었다.

영문 초록

n this paper, among the 11 maps collected by U.S. Navy Officer Bernadou during his visit to Joseon from 1884 to 1885, I analyzed the bibliography of Haedongjeondo and eight maps by province and the contents of these maps. In addition, Bernadou s writings in the National Geographic magazine, which included explanations of these nine maps, were analyzed to grasp the maps he collected and his perception of geography of Korea. As a result of the analysis, it was found that Haedongjeondo and eight maps by province copied by Bernadou were maps that were owned by Bishop Blanc, a French missionary, and the map was based on Jung Sang-gi’s Dongguk Jido. In particular, it was confirmed that these maps were the only maps with place-names written in Chinese and Korean alphabet simultaneously until now. Furthermore, it was confirmed in Bernadou s article in National Geographic Magazine that the reason for scribing Chinese and Korean alphabet together as to accurately fix Korea s place-names. In addition, it was revealed that Bernado recognized through Kim Jeong-ho s Daedongyeojido and Jeong Sang-ki s Donggukjido that map production level of Korea was significantly high. And it was found that Bernado s article in National Geographic Magazine described Korea from a relatively objective perspective and provided detailed field information for Americans who would explore Korea in the future. At the same time, the gold mine information, which Americans were most curious about Korea, was explained and even expressed on a map.
