국문 초록

현재 제주대학교박물관 2층에 전시되고 있는, 이른바 ‘朝天石’이라고 불리우는 조형물은 조성주체로부터 조성취지까지 확실하게 밝혀진 것 없이 여러 추정들로 모호하다. 이에 본고는 이 조형물의 조성 주체를 원점에서 다시 추론해보고, 이어 조성 취지를 탐색해 보려했다. 첫째, 제주대학교박물관에 전시중인 조형물의 조성 주체는 김영수 목사로 추정할 수 있다. 둘째, 조천석은 擎天岩이라고 불리는 자연석만을 가리키는 말이었다. 셋째, 따라서 이 조형물의 바른 이름은 ‘朝天石碑’ 혹은 ‘조천석의 표지’이다. 넷째, 평양의 조천석은 고구려의 건국과 관련된 古事까지 함축하고 있는 것처럼 제주의 조천석은 탐라의 건국신화인 三姓神話를 품고 있다. 조성 취지는, 평양 대동강 조천석의 풍류를 제주 산지천 경천암으로 옮겨보고자 했던 김영수 목사의 풍류로부터 출발했으며, 이는 그가 제주의 자연경관에 신선사상을 투영해 얻어지는 仙境意識에 심취했었기에 가능한 일이었다.

영문 초록

There is no confirmed information about a sculpture work called Jocheonseok, which is on display on the second floor of the Jeju National University Museum, including its creative subject and intention with only rampant estimations. The study looked into all kinds of records around Jeju, history books, and literary works and reached the following conclusions: First, It is estimated that the sculpture on display at the Jeju National University Museum was created by Moksa Kim Yeong-su. second, Jocheonseok refers only to the living rock of Gyeongcheonam or Jijuam. Third, This means that the right title of the sculpture should be Jocheon Stone Monument or Sign of Jocheonseok. Fourth, Just as Pyongyang s Jocheonseok implies an old anecdote related to the founding of Goguryeo, Jeju s Jocheonseok also embraces the Samsung myth, the founding myth of Tamna. The creative intention of the sculpture began with Moksa Kim Yeong-su s taste for the arts as he wanted to translate the taste of Jocheonseok by the Daedong River in Pyeongyang to Gyeongcheonam, Sanjicheon, Jeju. It was also possible as he was infatuated with the fairyland consciousness projected on the natural landscapes of Jeju.
