국문 초록

조선전기는 고려시기의 제주 해로를 그대로 따랐는데, 추자도를 경유하는 항로이다. 나주에서 추자, 해남에서 추자, 강진에서 추자로 가는 세 가지 항로가 있었다. 조선후기에는 소안도나 보길도의 백량, 넙도 등이 후풍처로 이용되면서 추자도를 거치지 않고 사수도 서쪽을 통과하여 화북포나 조천포에 도달하는 항로가 일반적이었는데, 남해안 후풍처에서 직접 제주로 오는 것이 추자 경유 항로보다 시간이 단축되었기 때문이다. 조선시대 제주 해로의 항해는 주변 지형을 눈으로 확인하면서 이동하는 視認 항해의 성격을 띠고 있기 때문에 나침반이나 지도의 사용은 드물었다. 대신에 해류나 조수의 흐름을 파악하고 풍향을 판단하여 항해에 이용하였다. 조난 사고에 대비해 출항 전에 해신에 대한 제사를 지냈고, 비상식량을 비축하고 해수를 이용하여 식수를 만드는 법도 숙지하고 있었다.

영문 초록

The Jeju sea route of the early Joseon Dynasty was the same as that of Goryeo Dynasty, which is a route through Chujado Island. There were three routes from Naju to Chujado, Haenam to Chujado and Gangjin to Chuzado. In the late Joseon Dynasty, Soando Island, Bogildo Island, and Neopdo Island were used as a place waiting for the wind, and it was common to pass through the west of the Sasudo Island without going through Chujado Island to the Jocheon port. This is because the time to come directly to Jejudo Island from the southern coast is shorter than the route via Chujado Island. The use of compass and maps was rare because the navigation of the Jeju Sea in the Joseon Dynasty was a navigation that moved while checking the surrounding terrain with eyes. Instead, the currents and tides were identified and the wind direction was judged and used for navigation. In preparation for the distress accident, they sacrificed the sea god before departure, and they were also aware of how to stockpile emergency food and make drinking water using seawater.
