서해 중부해역의 수중발굴 성과와 연계 교육 방안

국문 초록

국립해양문화재연구소는 우리나라에서 유일하게 수중발굴을 담당하는 문화재청 소속 연구기관이다. 유물은 목포와 태안에 소재한 연구소 소속 전시관에서 보관·전시 중이다. 이중 태안에 건립된 전시관인 국립태안해양유물전시관은 서해 중부해역 출수 유물을 관리한다. 서해 중부해역은 충청남도와경기도에 접한 바다를 말하는데, 배 8척 및 연꽃줄기 무늬 매병과 죽찰 등 3 점의 보물이 발굴된 중요한 해역이다. 특히 수중문화재가 집중 분포된 태안은 현재까지도 곳곳에서 주민의 신고, 탐사, 발굴조사를 통해 유물이 지속적으로 확인되고 있다. 이에 따라 지역 주민을 대상으로 정기적인 교육을 실시하여 수중문화재에 대한 이해와 관심 증진에 노력하고 있다. 전시관은 2018년 개관과 동시에 지역 어린이·청소년·성인을 대상으로 교육을 진행하였다. 교육 종료 후에는 운영 효과와 개선점을확인하기 위해 설문조사를 실시하였다. 2018년부터 2020년까지 작성된 설문조사를 분석한 결과 교육 전에는 기관의 존재 여부와 수중문화재에 대해 정확히 알지 못하였던 참여자들이 교육 후에 높은 만족도를 표시하여 인지도와이해도가 상승하였음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 성인의 경우 이미 기관의 존재와 수중문화재에 대해 숙지하고 있는사람이 많았고, 개별 의견으로 다양한 주제의 교육을 운영해달라는 요청이 지속되고 있었다. 이에 성인 교육을 중점적으로 분석하여 교육 주제 변경이만족도에 영향을 끼쳤는지 확인하였지만 큰 연관성을 찾을 수 없었다. 따라서 연계성이 부족한 개별 주제의 교육을 운영하기보다는 전시관이 지닌 고유기능에 중점을 둔 통일성 있는 교육을 진행할 것을 제안하였다. 그러나 이후에도 기타 교육 요청이 지속된다면, 이는 문화시설이 부족한 환경이 원인일가능성이 있으므로 장기적인 관찰과 분석이 필요하다. 서해 중부해역의 수중문화재는 유물의 출토 양상과 각 지역이 담고 있는이야기가 풍부하므로 단일 주제로도 충분히 활용될 수 있다. 또한 하나의 주제에서 파생되는 소주제가 매우 다양하여 교육 주제가 지니는 잠재성이 크다. 그러나 COVID-19 확산으로 인하여 체험과 답사에 제한이 생기면서 교육 운영에도 변화가 요구되는 실정이다. 현재의 문화재 교육은 디지털 기술의 발달로 실견(實見)을 대체할 수 있는 방법을 제안하는 방향으로 흘러가고있다. 시간과 공간, 안전 문제가 해결되지 않는 한 수중발굴을 참여자에게 실제로 경험시키기란 현실적으로 어려운 일이다. 교육 참여자가 전시관을 방문할 경우 VR 및 AR 체험 공간을 활용한 교육이 가능하지만, COVID-19로 개관일정이 유동적인 상황이다. 이에 따라 장기적으로는 시공간의 제약이 없는 메타버스를 통해 참여자 주도형 교육을 개발하여야 할 것으로 판단하였다. 다만 디지털 기술에 익숙하지 못한 고령층이 많이 거주하는 지역의 특성상순차적으로 교육을 개편하고, 사전 교육으로 프로그램 이용에 대한 안내를진행하는 등 새로운 방법을 도입하기 위한 과도기가 필요하다. 그리고 교육을 기획·운영하는 학예인력은 기술에 대해 충분히 숙지하여, 교육 참여자에게적절한 도움을 줄 수 있도록 대비하여야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage (NRIMCH), under the control of the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA), is in charge of the subsea excavation of maritime relics. The relics that it excavates are kept and displayed at the museums of the institute in Mokpo and Taean. The Taean National Maritime Museum deals with relics excavated from the waters off the mid-west coast area of Chungcheongnam-do Province and Gyeonggi-do Provinces, where a total of eight sunken boats and three classified ‘Treasures’ have been excavated so far. Even now, relics are being discovered and identified in this part of the sea as a result of local people’s reports or the work of exaction surveys. The authorities concerned are striving to raise locals’ interest in the cultural heritage objects excavated from the bottom of the sea through periodic education. Since its opening in 2018, the museum has provided education for local people from of all walks of life. According to the results of questionnaire-based surveys conducted between 2018 and 2020, this highly satisfying education has helped to raise local people’s understanding of the efforts of the institutions concerned to excavate and preserve relics. Under the current COVID-19 situation, which has resulted in restrictions being placed on hands-on experience programs and field surveys related to relics, the education on cultural heritage needs to be changed. With the rapid development of digital technology, it is necessary to find a method of providing education on maritime relics that can replace first-hand observation. It is realistically difficult to enable ordinary members of the public to fully experience subsea excavation, which entails diverse problems related to time, space, and safety. Accordingly, this paper proposes the use of the metaverse, which is not affected by time or space, and educational sessions at which the attendees can take the lead role. Given that there are many senior citizens in Taean who lack skills in using digital technology, this paper suggests that a transition period is needed in which new methods could be adopted, including reorganization of the relics-related education system, and local people could receive pre-education. Curators and other people in charge of planning and running such education need to familiarize themselves with the relevant skills in order to be able to cope with changes in the situation and provide adequate help to the people who attend the educational sessions.
