대한제국기 함경남도 사립학교 설립운동의 전개

국문 초록

함경남도는 그 지역이 가지는 특수성으로 인해 개항 이후 근대교육을 수용할 수 있는 토대가 마련되어 있었다. 우선 경제적으로 조선 후기 어업, 광업등을 통한 상품화폐경제가 발달하면서 대표적인 상업지역으로 발전해나갔다. 이러한 경제력은 인구 증가와 도시의 발달로 이어졌고, 신교육의 적극적인수용의 기반으로 작용하였다. 지역 내 향유와 신유의 갈등은 새로운 교육기관을 통해 지역 내의 영향력을 확대하려는 움직임으로 이어졌다. 또한 기독교가 유입되고 함경남도 내 선교활동이 이루어지면서 학교 설립에도 영향을주게 된다. 함경남도의 사립학교 설립은 1900년 전후로 시작되었다. 학교 설립은 주로 지방관, 지역유지, 유생, 상인 등 지역민을 중심으로 전개되었다. 함경남도의 초기 사립학교 설립은 지역민들의 활발한 학교 설립 참여를 통해 사립학교 설립운동에 중요한 기반을 마련할 수 있었다. 이들은 직접 학교를 세우기도 했고, 재정적으로 궁핍한 사립학교에 기부, 후원을 통해 재원을 마련해주기도 하였다. 이러한 학교들은 역사, 지리 등의 교과 과목과 대운동회와 같은 활동을 통해서 민족의식을 고취하였다. 개항기 함경남도의 사립학교 교육은 조선후기와 일제강점기 교육의 연결고리로써 작용하였다. 또한 일제강점기 다양한 민족운동의 기반이 되었다. 3.1운동 당시 함경남도의 학교와 학생들은 주도적인 역할을 하였다. 그 밖에도 함경남도에서 교육활동에 참여했던 인물들이 일제강점기 이후 민족운동을전개하거나, 함경남도 내에서 전개된 항일운동에도 일정 부분 영향을 주었다.

영문 초록

Hamgyeongnam-do had a foundation for accommodating modern education after the port opening due to its regional specificity. First of all, from an economic point of view, the region evolved into a representative commercial area as the commodity-money economy developed through fishing and mining in the late Joseon Dynasty. Such economic power led to population growth and urban development, and served as the basis for the active acceptance of new education. Conflicts between the local Confucian scholars and the new Confucian scholars created a movement to expand the intra-regional influence through new educational institutions. In addition, the introduction of Christianity and missionary activities in Hamgyeongnam-do affected the establishment of schools. The establishment of private schools in Hamgyeongnam-do began around 1900. This was mainly centered on local government officials, local influentials, Confucian scholars, and merchants. The active participation of residents provided an important foundation for the movement to establish private schools in the early stage. For instance, they built their own schools and financially supported those needy private schools through donations and sponsorship. These schools promoted national consciousness by teaching subjects such as history and geography and carrying out educational- and national awareness-oriented activities. During the Open Port Period, private school education in Hamgyeongnam-do bridged the late Joseon Dynasty and Japanese colonial era education. It also became the basis for various national movements in the Japanese colonial era. During the March 1st Independence Movement, the schools and students in Hamgyeongnam-do played a crucial role. Besides, those who participated in educational activities in Hamgyeongnam-do led national movements after the Japanese colonial era or partially influenced the anti-Japanese movements in Hamgyeongnam-do.
