국문 초록

본 논문은 사사기 13-16장에 기록된 삼손 이야기 중에서 마지막 부분인 사사기 16장에 등장하는 들릴라에 초점을 맞춰서 들릴라 이야기를 통해서 저자가 전하고자 하는 신학적인 메시지를 찾아보려고 시도했던 연구이다. 민족성이 명확히 기록되지 않은 들릴라와 삼손의 관계를 통해서 이방인 여인들과의 혼인이 문제가 아니라, 여인들의 민족성과는 별개로 ‘사랑’의 우선성(priority)이 여호와 하나님과의 관계에 있어서 얼마나 치명적인 위험성을 갖고 있나를 추적해 보았다. 16장에서 들릴라의 역할은 무엇인가? 그녀는 블레셋 방백들의 돈을 받고 삼손의 힘의 근원과 그를 결박해서 굴복시킬 수 있는 방법을 알아내는데 성공한다. 그녀가 ‘사랑’을 빌미로(14:16) 삼손에게서 비밀을 알아낸 것은 결국 인간적인 사랑이 사실은 여호와와의 관계 유지에 있어서 가장 큰 걸림돌이 될 수 있음을 보여준다. 만일 이방 여인을 사랑한 것이 여호와를 떠나게 만들었다는 것을 저자가 강조하려고 했다면, 오히려 들릴라의 민족성, 즉 그녀가 블레셋 사람이라는 것을 더 명확하게 강조하고 본문에도 기록했을 것이다. 그러나 그렇게 하지 않은 것을 보면 단순히 이방 여인인가 이스라엘 여인인가에 상관없이 ‘사랑’에 눈이 멀면 그 여인을 통해서 여호와와의 관계가 깨지게 된다는 것을 들릴라와의 관계에서 생긴 삼손 이야기는 보여준다. 즉 여자의 민족성이 관건이 아니라, 그녀의 뒤에 있는 이방인들이 문제라는 것이다. 약속의 땅 안에서 블레셋 사람들과 공존하는 상황에서 혼인 등을 통해 이들과의 관계를 피할수는 없기 때문에 여호와 하나님과의 관계를 떠나게 되는 가장 큰 유혹이 되는 것은 결국 인간적인 ‘사랑’이라는 것을 들릴라의 이야기는 강조하고 있다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes Judges 16 focusing on Delilah’s story and pursues its theological meaning. Samson’s wife is alien and so is regarded as a prostitute with whom he was involved. However, Delilah who finds out the secret of Samson’s power is not identified ethnically. Delilah’s story is not about Israel’s relationship with alien women, but about the danger of ‘love’ with women regardless of their ethnicity. This love may be the key reason to sever Israel’s relationship with YHWH. The author of Delilah’s story does not seem to be interested in her ethnicity and makes her disappear from the narrative scene right after she completed her role. By using the Hebrew verb sūr in Judges 16:17-20 the author emphasizes that Samson’s power is expected to leave him when his hair was cut as indeed his power left him. According to the author, then, YHWH left Samson. That is, the secret of Samson’s power does not reside in his hair, but depends on whether YHWH is with him or not. What is the role of Delilah in Judges 16? She succeeds in finding out the secret of Samson’s power and how to bind and subdue him. The fact that she uses the magic word ‘love’ repeatedly and finds out the secret shows that the love between men and women could be the most dangerous stumbling block in maintaining Israel’s relationship with YHWH. If the author highlighted the love for alien women would be the major obstacle in the way to the right relationship with YHWH, he should have identified Delilah’s ethnicity. However, the author wants to make sure that the love between men and women regardless ethnicity is a hindrance that breaks Israel’s connection with YHWH. In Israel’s coexistence with the Philistines, the best way to maintain their relationship with YHWH is not by prescribing women’s ethnicity but by being aware of the dangers of love for women in general. In the land, the prioritization of the relation with YHWH over the relation with other women is what Israel should have in their mind.
