교회의 공공성에 대한 함석헌과 하우어워스의 입장 비교 연구

국문 초록

함석헌과 하우어워스는 각기 다른 역사적 상황에서 당대 기독교회가 나아가야 할 바람직한 방향에 관하여 말했다. 함석헌은 기독교의 공공성과 사회 참여를 강조하고, 하우어워스는 교회의 교회 됨이 기독교의 진정한 사회윤리라고 주장했다. 함석헌은 한국 기독교가 올바른 역사 철학의 정립과 공적 참여를 통하여 한국 사회에서 정신적 역할을 해 줄 것을요청했다. 반면에 하우어워스는 라인홀드 니버 이후로 본격화된 미국 기독교의 공적 참여가 토대주의 인식론에 근거한 것으로 더 이상 실현 불가능한 ‘보편적 정의’ 확립이라는 정치적 목적을 위해 잘못된 기독교 사회윤리를 실행하는 것이라 비판한다. 그리고 진정한 기독교 사회윤리는 예수 내러티브를 통한 성품의 공동체로서 교회를 만들어나가는 것이며, 그 자체가 참된 정치에의 참여라고 주장한다. 본고는 기독교의 보편성을 강조하는 함석헌은 하우어워스가 가지고 있는 기독론적이고 종말론적 성격을 상실할 위험이 있고, 반토대주의적 입장에 기대고 있는 하우어워스는 현재 역사 속 기독교가 처해있는 현실을 무시하고 분파주의적이면서도 동시에 또 하나의 은밀한 토대주의적 성격을 가질 위험이 있다고 본다. 따라서 오늘날 바람직한 교회의 사회윤리는 토대주의와 반토대주의 사이에서 한쪽으로 치우치지 않도록 균형을 잡는 것이 필요하며, 공시적 관점에서의 교회의 공공성과 통시적 관점에서의 종말론적 소망을 모두 붙잡는 것이 필요하다.

영문 초록

Ham Seok-heon and Stanley Hauerwas discussed the desirable direction for the contemporary Christian church in different historical situations. Ham Seokheon emphasized the public nature and social participation of Christianity, and Hauerwas argued that “being a church of the church” is the true social ethic of Christianity. Ham Seok-heon requested that Korean Christianity play a spiritual role in Korean society through the establishment of a correct philosophy of history and public participation. On the other hand, Hauerwas criticized the public participation of Christianity in the United States, which had been in full swing since Reinhold Niebuhr, was based on foundationalist epistemology and that it was practicing a wrongheaded Christian social ethics for the political purpose of establishing ‘universal justice,’ a notion that was no longer feasible. And argues that true Christian social ethics aims to build the church as a community of character through the narrative of Jesus, and it is itself a true participation in politics. Ham Seok-heon, who emphasized the universality of Christianity, risked losing the Christological and eschatological character of Hauerwas. Conversely, Hauerwas, leaning on an anti-foundationalist position, is in danger of adopting a sectarian and crypto-foundationalism while ignoring the reality of Christianity in history. Therefore, it is necessary to strike a balance between foundationalism and anti-foundationalism for the desirable social ethics of the church today, and it is necessary to grasp both the public nature of the church from a synchronic point of view and its eschatological hope from a diachronic point of view.
