초정 조의현 시조 연구

국문 초록

초정 조의현은 1926년 동아일보에 작품 ｢만류(挽留)｣를 발표하면서 작품 활동을 시작하였다. 그는 조운, 조남령과 함께 영광 지역의 3대 시인으로 손꼽히며, 그가 작고한 1985년까지 52편의 시･시조와 3편의 가사, 6편의 산문을 남긴 것으로 알려져 있다. 조의현의 시편에 시대 감정, 시적 대상을 바라보는 심도 있는 관조적 태도, 탁월한 서정적인 표현이 나타나므로 그가 남긴 작품에 대해 분석하고 문학적 성과를 살펴볼 만하다. 그러나 조의현의 작품에 대한 논의가 매우 미흡한 형편에 있다. 현재 나와 있는 유일한 조의현 전집에는 그가 쓴 작품이 모두 시조에 포함되어 있다. 시조로 분류되어있는 조의현의 작품 중 다수가 자유시의 형식을 취하고 있는데도, 조의현의 시편에 대해 명확한 장르 탐색이 시도되지 않고 있는 것이다. 이에 연구의 필요성을 인지하여, 본 연구의 2장에서는 조의현의 작품을 자유시와 시조로 구분하여 그동안 잘못 인식되어 온 조의현의 작품에 대한 장르 구분을 바로잡고자 했다. 이로써, 조의현이 창작한 시조를 20편으로 정리할 수 있었다. 그리고 3장에서는 2장에서 목록화한 시조 20편에 나타난 내용상･표현상의 특성을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 그의 시조에는 민족의식에 근거한 시대적 우울과 봄날의 애상, 이별의 정한 등의 전통적 정서가 주조음을 이룬다는 걸 발견하였다. 또한 자연적 소재를 통해 상실감과 외로움의 정서를 형상화하였는데, 이러한 특성은 전통적 정서를 심화하도록 돕는다. 요컨대 조의현은 고전적 장르인 시조에 전통적 정서를 담아내는 것으로 시조미학을 실천한 것이다. 형식적 측면에서 조의현의 시편을 분석하여, 작품의 장르를 자유시와 시조로 명확하게 밝히는 작업은 정형의 양식인 시조의 정체성을 지키는 데 일조할 것이다. 또 조의현의 시조를 내용적 측면에서 살펴보고 시적 특성과 작품 세계를 정리하여 시적 성과를 조명하는 일은 시조문학사를 폭넓게 이해하고, 시조 문단의 흐름을 총체적으로 정리하는 데도 기여하리라 판단된다.

영문 초록

This paper presents an investigation into the Sijo works of Chojeong Jo Ui-hyeon that is considered as one of Yeonggwang s three greatest poets along with Jo Woon and Jo Nam-ryeong. He never made an official debut via literary contests in spring or literary magazines. In 1926, however, he published his Manryu in Dong-a Ilbo･ Since then, he created 52 poems and Sijos, three Gasas, and six prose works until his death in 1985. His works reflect his in-depth contemplative attitudes toward poetic objects and his remarkable lyrical expressions. It is worth analyzing his works and discussing their literary achievements, but there are not many researches on the poet. Recognizing a need for research on the poet, the present study arranged his creative world in the aspects of form and content. His collections of works have no clear distinction between his poems and Sijos with his poems placed under the Sijo category. Chapter of the study categorized his poems and Sijos based on discussions about basic Sijo forms by professional Sijo poems in 1926～1928. The poet created 20 Sijos, 31 poems, and four Gasas. Chapter 4 analyzed 20 of his Sijo works catalogued in Chapter 2, 3 according to their characteristics in content and expression and found that the main tunes of his Sijos were traditional emotions including depression of the times based on national consciousness, sorrow of spring, and sentiment of parting. His embodiment of his sense of loss and loneliness with natural materials contributed to the intensification of this characteristic. In short, he practiced the aesthetics of Sijo by reflecting traditional emotions in the classical genre of Sijo. There is a need to expand horizontally discussions to analyze the creative worlds of Sijo poets. It is important not to limit the scope of research to professional Sijo poets and identify poets that created Sijo works but were less well-known to examine their poetic achievements. Such efforts will help to broaden the understanding of the history of Sijo literature and arrange the flow of Sijo literary circles comprehensively.
