淸末 民初 영문해설 北京方言 표제 중국어 교재 연구

국문 초록

중국의 淸末 民初 시기에는 서양인에 의한 다량의 영문해설 중국어 교재가 편찬되었다. 그 중에서도 北京方言 교재는 당시 가장 유행하고 표준음으로 인식되었던 북경음에 대한 인식을 엿볼 수 있고, 알파벳을 바탕으로 한 표기로 인해 어음을 정확하게 고증할 수 있다는 면에서 높은 가치를 지닌다. 본 연구는 北京方言을 표제로 하고 있는 중국어 교재를 목록화하고 저자와 각 교재의 체제, 발음 표기 및 음운 특징에 대하여 살펴보았다. 먼저, 1800년대 중후반 北京方言 교재의 탄생은 天津條約 체결로 인한 외국인의 북경 거주 및 수시 왕래에 대한 자유 보장과 밀접한 연관이 있다. 이들 교재에서 北京方言은 “pekinese(혹은 pekingese) dialect”, “peking dialect”, “peking colloquial” 등으로 지칭되는데,『A Chinese and English vocabulary in the Pekinese Dialect』, 『Idiomatic dialogues in the Peking colloquial for the use of students』, 『Radical index to pocket dictionary and Pekingese syllabary』 등이 있으며, 이를 편찬한 저자는 외교관(월터 힐리어), 해관원 (조지 카터 스턴트, 피에트로 폴레티), 선교사 (천시 굿리치, 프레더릭 밸푸어) 등이 있다. 이들은 공통적으로 『語言自邇集』을 편찬한 토마스 웨이드의 표기법(웨이드식 표기)으로 발음을 표기하였으나, 성모 ts, ts‘, s에 대한 표기가 각 저서마다 조금씩 상이하며, 특히 밸푸어의 저서 『Idiomatic dialogues in the Peking colloquial for the use of students』에서는 tsǔ를 tsz(혹은tsze), ei운모를 eï, uei를 uy로 표기하는 등 예외적인 표기가 많이 등장한다. 음운 특징의 면에서는 성모에 있어서는 모든 교재에서 疑母, 즉 ŋ성모가 소실되었다는 것이 웨이드의 교재에서와 상이하며, 운모에 있어서는 iai, io, yo운모의 출현 유무와 출현 시 해당 운모를 갖는 글자의 어음에 있어 각 교재가 차이를 보인다. 종합적으로 보았을 때, 北京方言 표제의 영문해설 중국어 교재는 기본적으로 웨이드식 표기를 바탕으로 쓰여졌으나 일부 음운 표기및 세부 글자의 어음에 있어서 차이를 보이는 면이 있다. 본 연구는 종전에 연구가 미비했던 영문해설 北京方言 표제의 중국어 교재의 편찬과 어음 특징에 대해서 종합적으로 고찰했다는 의의를 지니며, 북경음의 역사를 전면적으로 규명하는데 기여할 수 있다.

영문 초록

During the late Qing Dynasty in China, a large number of English commentary Chinese textbooks were compiled by Westerners. Among them, the Pekingese textbook is of high value in that it offers a glimpse of the perception of Peking Dialect, which was recognized as the most popular and standard sound at the time, and accurately proves Chinese sound due to alphabet-based notation. This study listed Chinese textbooks with the heading of Peking Dialect and examined the system, pronunciation notation, and phonetic characteristics of the author and each textbook. English commentary on Pekingese heading at the time referred to as pekingese dialect, peking dialect, peking colloquial, etc. 『A Chinese and English vocabulary in the Pekingese Dialect』, 『Idiomatic the Peking dialect』, 『Radical index to pocket dictionary and Pekingese syllabary』 etc, there are diplomats(Walter Hillier), maritime officers(George Carter Stent, Pietro Poletti), and missionaries (Chauncey Goodrich, Frederick Balfour). They commonly adopted Thomas Wade s system, but the description for ts, ts and s is slightly different for each book, especially in Balfour s book, 『Idiomatic Dialogues in the Peking colloquial for the use of students』. Furthermore, each textbook differs in the presence or absence of the final iai, io, and yo. Overall, the English commentary Chinese textbook under the heading of Peking Dialect was basically written based on wade’s system, but there are differences in some description of initial, final and letters. This study is meaningful in that it comprehensively examines the compilation of Chinese textbooks and the characteristics of sound under the heading of Peking Dialect, which previously lacked research, and can contribute to the full investigation of the history of Peking Dialect.
