국문 초록

<요로원야화기>는 정치제도와 사회정책의 부조리한 상황, 사회 저변에 깔린 민간의 정서와 세태, 당대 사대부의 사유와 가치가 생생하게 표현된 풍자문학의 백미이다. 따라서 17세기 후반 서사문학의 흐름을 파악하는 데 중요한 작품이다. 이를 토대로 본 연구는 <요로원야화기>에 나타난 17세기 조선의 세태풍자와 그 의미를 밝히는 데 목적을 두었다. 즉 작품을 통해 구체적 세태풍자의 내용과 방법을 고찰하여, 조선 후기 문학에 어떤 존재감을 발휘했는가를 조명하였다. 그 핵심 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 작품의 형성 배경에 대해 살펴보았다. <요로원야화기>는 역사적으로 17세기 후반의 정치 사회적 배경을 기반으로 탄생한 작품이다. 전란의 소용돌이를 거친 후 격화되었던 정치의 주도권 쟁탈과 사회제도의 문란으로 파생한 각종 문제점의 노출은 작품에 고스란히 투영되었다. 한편 문학적으로는 동시대 작가들이 쌓아 올린 성과의 토대 위에서 근대정신을 반영한 서사문학의 대표작으로 자리매김하였다. 이처럼 ‘요로원’이라는 한정적 공간에서 하룻밤 사이에 일어난 사건을 극적으로 구성한 <요로원야화기>는 우연히 만난 주인공(시골 선비)과 상대방(서울 선비)의 대화를 통해 두 인물의 갈등과 당대의 사회 문제들을 여과 없이 드러낸 작품이다. 둘째, 세태풍자의 실상에 대해 살펴보았다. <요로원야화기>에서 사회적 갈등을 유발했던 풍자의 내용은 매우 현실적인 당면 과제였다. 즉 빈부, 신분, 혼인, 지식, 지역 등의 문제와 과거, 붕당의 문제, 학문, 수신(修身)의 문제이다. 이처럼 다양한 화제를 망라하며 두 선비는 때로는 농담과 예리한 논쟁으로, 또 한편으로는 서로에 대한 공감과 위로로 대화를 전개하고 있다. 세태풍자의 내용은 신분 차별, 제도의 부패, 정치적 분열, 공허한 명분, 현실과 이상의 차이 등 당대 만연했던 문제들의 정곡을 찌른 것이었다. 요컨대 귀향하는 시골 선비가 우연히 만난 서울 선비와 하룻밤을 지내면서 논한 시정 세태의 풍자라는 설정은 참신하고 특별한 소설의 미덕을 보여주었다. 더불어 위장과 기만의 반전, 삽입시의 활용을 통한 변화의 묘미, 대화체를 통한 역동성 등 다양한 방법으로 몰입도를 높여주었다. 셋째, 세태풍자의 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 17세기는 다양한 목소리가 파열을 일으키면서 새로운 질서 확립의 기운이 감지되던 시기였으며, <요로원야화기>는 당시 조선 사회가 안고 있는 문제점들을 세태풍자의 방식으로 풀어낸 대표적 작품으로 큰 의미가 있다. 먼저 붕당의 폐해와 불공정한 과거 시험에 대한 두 인물의 견해를 통해 당시 정치에 대한 의미를 조명하였다. 다음으로 근대 사회로 이행되어 가는 변화 과정에서 벌어지는 향촌 사회의 변동, 계층과 지역 격차로 인한 갈등 상황 등 당대 사회 병폐에 대한 의미를 규명하였다. 끝으로 <요로원야화기>의 선후 작품을 통해 문학사적 가치를 밝히고, 작품의 내적 특징을 아울러 검토하여 문학적 의미를 탐색하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the satire of society that appeared in in Joseon in the 17th century and its meaning. That is, this study examined concrete contents and methods of the satire of society through the work to illuminate what kind of presence was demonstrated by the satire of society in literature in the late Joseon period. The main contents of the foregoing are summarized as follows. First, the background of the formation of the work was examined. Historically, is a work that was created based on the political and social background of the late 17th century. Through the dialogue between the protagonist (a rural scholar) and the other party (a Seoul scholar), who accidentally met with each other, this work clearly reveals the conflict between the two figures due to differences in values and social problems of the time. In addition, literarily, this work dramatically constructed an event that occurred overnight in a limited space called ‘Yorowon.’ Second, the contents and methods of the satire of society were examined. The contents of satire that caused social conflicts in were very realistic present problems such as problems related to the rich and the poor, statuses, marriage, knowledge, etc., and problems related to regions, civil service examinations, political factions, studies, and discipline. Covering diverse topics as such, the two scholars are developing conversations, while telling jokes sometimes, sharply debating other times, and consoling each other still other times. The methods of satire of society expressed in are also diverse. First, the protagonist is trying to make a delightful reversal by showing his real self after hiding his identity with camouflage and deception against the ridicule of the other party. Next, through the use of inserted poems, the charm of changes between diffusion and condensation, tension, and relaxation, was given to the overall work. Lastly, through the intersection of poetry and proses, the author expressed his thoughts circuitously. Finally, through dialogue styles, dynamics was given to the work and the level of immersion was increased. Third, the meaning of the satire of society was examined. First, the meaning of politics at the time was illumined through the views of the two figures on the evils of political factions and the unfair civil service examinations. Next, the meanings of social ills at the time such as changes in rural society and conflicts due to class and regional differences in the process of transition to modern society, were investigated. Finally, the literary historical value of was revealed through the works before and after it, and the literary meaning of the work was explored by examining the internal characteristics of the works.
