국문 초록

이기백은 한국 현대사학을 주도하였을 뿐만 아니라 그 수준을 대변한 학자라고 할 수 있다. 그는 인간 중심으로 한국사 흐름의 대세를 파악하면서, 한국고대나 고려시대의 정치사회사는 물론 사상사에 관한 전문적 연구 성과를 달성하였다. 처음 그는 삼국시대 불교전래 과정을 추구하면서 사상사에 관심을 가졌지만, 단순히 사변적 논리나 교리를 밝히기보다는 사상이 당대 사회와 어떻게 관련되는지를 분석하는 사회사상사를 정립시켰다. 이기백의 사론은 다원적 보편성을 추구하면서 학문적 진리를 제공하려는 것이다. 그는 유물사관이나 특정한 이론을 한국사에 적용하는 것을 찬성하지 않았다. 특히 일원적 원리에 의한 역사 발전을 부인하였다. 이론을 앞세우기보다는 한국사의 구체적 모습에서 일정한 기준을 찾아내어, 역사를 진전시키는 원칙, 곧 법칙을 세워나가려고 하였다. 왜냐하면 인간성은 다양하게 나타나며, 역사를 전개시키는 법칙도 시대에 따라 달리 나타날 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 이기백은 다원적인 여러 법칙을 이끌어 내기 위해 역사적 사실의 진실, 곧 진리를 추구하였다. 그것은 객관적인 인식으로써만이 가능하며, 역사연구에서 엄격한 문헌비평을 통해 이루어진다. 한국사는 세계사와 마찬가지로 보편적인 여러 법칙에 의해 발전하는데, 그는 그러한 여러 법칙 중 어떤 것들이 특별히 적용되어 나타났는가에 따라 한국사의 특수한 면을 읽을 수 있다고 하였다.

영문 초록

Lee Ki-baek not only led the modern history of Korea but he also represented the rich history of Korea. With the understanding of general flow trend of Korean history anthropocentrically, Lee accomplished a scholarly research result on both the social history of politics and the history of thought in ancient Korea and the Koryo Dynasty. At first, Lee became interested in the history of thought by pursuing the introduction of Buddhism in the period of the Three Kingdoms. However, rather pursing speculative logic or doctrine, he established history of social thoughts which concatenate the history of thought with social aspects of the time. The historical view of Lee Ki-baek tries to provide academic truth pursuing mul tidiscipl inary universality. Lee did not approve of appl ying the materialist view of history or particular theory to Korean history. Especially, he denied historical development based on unitary principle. Rather claiming theory, Lee tried to establish principles that progress history by discovering certain standards grounded on concrete aspects of Korean history. He understood that human nature varies so principles that progress the history are also appeared variously according to the times. Lee Ki-baek pursued the truth of historical facts to derive multidisciplinary principle. It is possible through the objective cognition and rigorous literature criticism in the study of history. Korean history is developed by universal principles as with world history, so Lee could explore unique aspects of Korean history by analyzing which principles among various universal principles were particularly applied to Korean history.
