메를로-퐁티의 관점에서 본 가상현실의 감각경험

국문 초록

기술력에 힘입어 우리는 가상현실이라는 새로운 세계를 체험하며 살고 있다. 시각적 리얼리티의 확보, 상호작용의 강화, 감각의 증강, 몸의 움직임을 반영하는 기술력이 발전하면서 가상현실은 실재하는 영향력 있는 세계가 되었다. 이로 인해 가상현실은 일상의 경험, 교육적 경험, 훈련, 놀이와 예술적 경험을 대체해 나가고 있다. 본 연구는 ‘가상현실 체험이 실제적 체험과 같을 수 있는가’라는 문제의식에서 출발하였으며 메를로-퐁티의 몸 지각론과 살 존재론의 관점에서 이 문제에 접근한다. 메를로-퐁티는 인간의 몸은 정신과 분리될 수 없으며 인간의 감각활동은 지각과 판단을 포함한다고 주장하였다. 가상현실은 인간의 몸이 새로운 존재양식을 경험하는 것이므로 메를로-퐁티의 몸지각 이론은 가상현실 체험을 성찰하는 면밀한 관점을 제공할 수 있다고 본다. 가상현실에서 이루어지는 몸의 감각경험은 어떠한지, 가상현실 체험은 실제 체험과 어떤 점에서 같거나 다른지 등에 대해 논의한 결과, 인간은 가상현실과 융합하여 새로운 지각경험을 축적해 나가고 있으며, 가상현실은 강화된 시각 중심성과 현실세계보다 살의 두께감을 지니지 못한 특징을 지니고 있다고 보았다. 또한 가상현실을 실재감 있는 세계로 만드는 것은 놀이적 존재, 유희적 존재로서의 인간본성이 함께 기여하고 있는 것으로 생각된다. 앞으로 가상현실 체험에 대한 본 논의를 바탕으로 교육에서 인간의 변화하는 몸에 대해 어떤 입장을 취할 것인지에 대해 논의해 보아야 할 것임을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

Due to the advancement of technology, we are living and experiencing a new world of virtual reality. The technology that creates virtual reality secures visual reality, strengthens interaction, augments human senses, and reflects body movements. As a result, virtual reality has become a real and influential world. Now, virtual reality is replacing everyday experiences, educational experiences, training, play and artistic experiences. This study started with the question of Can virtual reality experience be the same as real experience? and approaches this problem from the perspective of Merleau-Ponty s body perception theory and chair ontology. Merleau-Ponty argued that the human body cannot be separated from the mind and that human sensory activity involves perception and judgment. Since virtual reality is a human body experiencing a new mode of existence, Merleau-Ponty s body perception theory can provide a detailed perspective to reflect on virtual reality experiences. As a results of discussing what is the sensory experience of the body in virtual reality and in what way is the virtual reality experience the same or different from the actual experience, are as follows. First, humans are accumulating new perceptual experiences by fusion with virtual reality. Second, virtual reality has a reinforced visual center. Third, the flesh of virtual reality is thinner than that of the real world.Fourth, the human nature as a playful and sensuous being contributes to making virtual reality a real world. Finally, based on this discussion on virtual reality experience, I suggested that we should discuss what educational direction to take for the changing body of humans.
